I 100% disagree. I play the game competitively (I'm okay but not great. Took a game off of Hawkeye once on stream, even if he was tired an underestimating me and proceeded to wipe the floor with my ass for the rest of the match).
SCV is my favorite fighter of all time. The combo system doesn't have extraneous moves to be flashy; most combos in the game are two moves: a lauch/stun and a finisher. The way this system works, you usually get to choose between a finisher that does more damage and a finisher that has better oki. Combos that are longer than that mostly use meter or walls, giving meter and walls a use.
I like the just guard system which lets players get gret rewards for a hard read and discourages the entire game from becoming an AA BB fest. There are high tech skill characters to play like aLat if you want to work hard for a slight edge, but also characters like Mitsu or Patroklos who are easy to play and still plenty viable. The guard break system prevents the game from being too defensive and offers a reward for getting the right moves blocked, which adds to the game's depth.
I could go in ad nauseum, but I genuinely think SCV is one of the best thought out 3D fighters ever made.
Well it never really suceeded as a fighting game. Hell, even SMASH is more popular, that's saying something and it isn't reven a fighting game.

I thought the meter was done pretty well, especially considering what a new mechanic it is, not just to the series but to 3D fighters at large. Just needs some fine tuning, maybe some more ways to use it defensively to offset the more offense oriented nature.

SClV is probably the one most similar to V, but even than there's enough differences to warrant just skipping it all together. Just get V and work your way up. "Easy to learn, hard to master" accurately sums up what you'll be in for. Especially depending on the character you want to start with.

I have to agree with this - I think the key to SC's success is its pacing and hard read.
Most 2D fighters have a near-impossible read, in that they're too fast to really discern what's going on. In SC, by contrast, you can easily tell where a move is going to land - which means you have to work that much harder to keep your opponent off guard.
So, at least in my experience, instead of constantly spamming one or two moves, I find myself having to memorize the entire moveset of a given fighter to keep my opponent off balance. And when you have an opponent who you've been sparring with for ~8 years who's memorized Yoshimitsu's entire moveset, shit gets fucking intense.

Nightmare is in pretty much every game after Soul Blade but he changes drastically between SC2 and SC3, with Sieg taking on his old moveset.
If you jus want single player stuff, I recommend SCIII. The actual fighting mechanics are broken an untested as fuck but Chronicles of the Sword is probably some of the most fun you can have with Soul Calibur by yourself.

Aah, Nightmare? He's pretty good in V, solidly mid tier i believe, which is a definitely step up from how he was in lV. Sucks that you cant play online, it has some really good netcode, if a few DCs, at least on PS3. XBL is pretty good, buttery smooth connections if you're on the same coast.
There isnt much single player content but the character creator is the best its ever been. It's not much of a single player game, ll and lll were better for that.
