Harvest Moon is the localized title of the Bokujou Monogatari series. Natsume trademarked it when they began localizing the games, so they own the name "Harvest Moon". In 2013, Marvelous, the developer for the series, had a falling out with Natsume. In response, Natsume decided to make their own farming game with the Harvest Moon name while XSEED got the rights to localize the next BM game as Story of Seasons.
Long story short, HM3D: The Lost Valley and any other HM games you see from Natsume in the future are not real "Harvest Moon" games.

Harvest Moon is the localized name given to Bokujo Monogatari when Natsume was doing localizations and butchering many of them.
The series is owned by Marvelous who no longer wish to do business with Natsume and use their own localization branches but due to jewish copyright/trademarks in the west they can not use the name Harvest Moon since it was trademarked by Natsume so the Bokujo series will localized as Story of Seasons by Xseed/MarvelousAQL/Whoever depending on your region.
Any games titled Harvest Moon at this point is just Natsume acting out of spite for losing a contract so they are trying to create confusion.

But to be honest smartphones killed it to a degree, but it was also carts get higher density. Portable games are too damn long and elaborate to play on the go now. Tetris is a car ride, pokemon is a god damn commitment.
Consoles are also dead because in an effort to give more content, graphics, etc they lost all their advantages over just sticking a gpu in a PC. This will be a slower death though.
Well the 3DS already has all the essential games fanchises on it anyway.
