They both seem kinda bad. Final boss should be a cool test of what you've learned; trying to make it a big monster when the game has trained you on 1 on 1 duels is dumb, but so is making the final boss a 1 on 1 duel when the game has trained you to fight big monsters.
I guess I'd usually prefer the 2nd, but it's mostly in execution.

No, I'm one of those people who believes games don't need lazily shoved in 'bosses' that only exist as a means to create a wall that you have to grind to pass in any given RPG.
I didn't say there should be no content or something akin to bosses, but a literal "boss fight" is stupid to have and always was outside of final bosses and very story relevant ones. For example, fighting Adachi in P4 has meaning behind it, but fighting "the ice lord of the ice kingdom because you're in an icy cave" doesn't. It's just thrown in to buffer the play time and create entirely pointless challenge.

I dunno, I like 'em both. I guess it depends on the game. On one hand it's pretty cool to fight a massive boss after fighting a bunch of enemies that are your size.
On the other hand it's cool to fight a bunch of giant bosses, but have the final one be your size. It gives the impression that all of that power has been condensed into a normal-sized humanoid.
