ITT: Games that have aged like a fine wine.

The massive scar of the backtracking for the stupid keys or whatever hold this game back like a lead anchor. Sadly, not wine quality. More like decent beer.
>>
>>285484790
>NEEDS lock on to be playable
I know they were trying to do a throwback what if metroid was 3d type of deal but its terrible sorry.
>>
>>285485281
If you know of it beforehand, you can get a lot of the artifacts much earlier than when the game actually expects you to do it.
>>
>>285485281
I like that part, it brings depth to the environments
>>
>>285485569
You said expects but I think you mean requires.
You have to walk past that red missile door at least to get the space jump boot things and by then you have missiles. Anyone that had to get all 11 in a row didn't Metroid right.
>>
>>285485281
>complaining about backtracking
>in a metroid game
>>
>aged like a fine wine

never got this analogy. That would imply that the game got better over time, since un-aged wine is just smashed grapes

metroid prime was definitely a better experience when it first came out, really I don't know of any games where this isn't true
>>
>aged
Only 2 generations have passed without much changes, are you 15 or what.
>>
>>285484790
If by "fine wine" you mean "goat milk", then sure.
>>
I think OP meant to post Super Metroid, which as time went on only better and better speedrunning techniques and shortcuts were found and showed just how much of a masterpiece is truly is.
>>
>>285484790
Prime was never good so you can't even say it aged like milk.
>>
>>285486183

Probably because 'aged like an 18 year old Speyside that's still in the cask' is a bit long winded.

Just beat MP1 like a few months ago.
Backtracking wasn't bad at all, especially since you often found new shit everytime you did. There were only a few bullshit times, like the one artifact hidden behind a random wall in magmoor that you don't even need x ray to get.

Yeah nah, this is actually a prime example of how a game can actually feel worse as time goes on and we become used to more refined game mechanics.

Goat milk doesn't age.

>>285485569

That requires a second play through and even then you might not remember every location. Many of them you can't just 'know' or explore for. For example the one in magmoor caverns (the rock pillar) is rather random. You can get it rather soon, but you would never know it was there unless you were willing to spam missiles on everything, and at that point in the game, you aren't exactly loaded with missiles.

It's still padding and really unnecessary. Why not just unlock the damn core after Omega is dead? Or maybe fewer of these keys?

Also, knowing they exist makes it less annoying but it's still annoying. In super metroid you are rewarded with different paths and sequence breaks of varying difficulty for knowing before hand, but in this game, it just reduces the time needed to beat the game.

I'll let this post slide if you can differentiate clearly in words what you think the difference is between a bad jump, and a difficult one.
>>
>>285485281
that was backtracking done right. By the time you have to do it, you'll probably have a lot or most of the artifacts unless you are a tard. The game gives you a hint as to where they all are too and you find a ton of new shit while searching for them because you are fully upgraded
>>
If someone could remake this game to fix the awful graphics, terrible controls, and annoying backtracking, it'd be fantastic. As it stands, this game is just tedious.

Metroid Prime Trilogy on the Wii does this almost perfectly, but you're probably one of those faggots that will claim it's shit because of motion controls.

>>
>>285487980

How do you know the intended sequence in super metroid? please, do tell.

protip: you can't. You can't because the game encourages you to use more difficult manuevers to uncover secrets. Secrets that may or may not be access to items before another certain item is requires. Did nintendo intend for us to get ice beam before power bomb? If so, why give us the option to wall jump up to it so early? Same thing with wave beam. How about speed booster before varia suit if you're fast enough?
>>
>>285488237
It's about having agency over controlling your character. Most people get hung up on 64's camera because it is admittedly terrible. But the stuff you could do in terms of movement tech in that game you couldn't do in any later 3D mario.

Sunshine started by removing longjump. Then Galaxy removed dives, made sidehop useless and longjump was all there was, and just added more temporary powerups to make up for it.

It's simply a thought experiment. I could ask the same thing of you. Hard vs. Bad. sorry, but your logical failure of 'git gud' doesn't work.

How about shooting games? Is bad shooting controls ok in a game that is about shooting?

How about puzzle games? Is a bad puzzle ok in a game about puzzles?

We have many examples of games that have a core concept but fail to deliver in some area (Water Temple in OoT. It's pure tedium, but under your logic it's perfectly acceptable because it's still part of the core gameplay).

btw, prime is a good game, but it has flaws, and one flaw is that it has an obvious, shallow backtracking sequence that adds nothing to it's gameplay. if anything, is a quick bandaid for a game that by comparison to Super Metroid, had less incentive to explore.

Room design. Being sent past a door you can't open or can't reach, then acquiring an item that allows you to reach it is the most basic form of player guidance.
