MvC3 has a better roster than either. Sure, not quite as large as 2, but more varied than SF vs X-Men (and guests).
As for balance, remember 2 was the game with 5 viable characters. And for as "solved" as people say 3 is, Vergil still hasn't won EVO, and a different team has won it all four times. And people are bringing out new shit all the time.
reminder most of the reasons mvc3 was shit was because of marvel decisions and they would not even ok the final patch capcom had
it was mostly the FGC fault for not getting it to happen to, when marvel ultimate alliance 2 dlc was removed the community and devs pretty much begged marvel to extend the dlc time and had more support then marvel 3 did
