>>
>>285456016

You were a fool to take it. Any sort of games study courses are a joke in the IT field.

It's like saying you want to be a novelist, so you went and studied "Booking". It's a waste of fucking time. A better use of your time would have been some sort of applied mathmatics or an introductory language.

I'd say make the most of it, but recognise it'll do fucking nothing for you when you go out looking for employment, unless you want to work for clueless startup devs that go bust every one to two years.

That schedule looks like it will teach you absolutely nothing about making a video game and all about how "people perceive gaming" and that kind of garbage.

I guess video games getting elective courses at this shit level really says something about society. All those twatter sprees and BoobTube personalities actually make this a legitimate academic topic worth college tuition.

I'm not sure which is more pathetic, the class attending or the "professor" teaching it.

So now that this is a class, how far are we from "gaming journalism/commentation" becomes a legit college major and you have guest lecturers like PewDiePie?

That sounds like a useless class.

Game design has nothing to do with video games. It's basically a hybrid class of statistics and human behavior. What you're paying money to take is /v/ 101.

What happened was that they banned general IQ test on applications for jobs in the US. This was because black people were being held from certain jobs because they couldnt score high enough.

IQ is almost perfectly predictive of success in college and success in college is used by employers later. College became the new IQ measure (see how most schools are not training for specific jobs) but it takes 4 years to do.

Notably, black people can't do well enough to get into colleges, or even medical programs after college. I've checked the MCAT records and pretty much no black people qualify to go to medical school at white person standards. So the whole thing is failing.

3 weeks off at Christmas, 4 weeks off at Easter and 12 weeks off at Summer is pretty standard at most English universities. Ofc you're expected to be revising and doing coursework over this time but a lot of people do as minimal as possible.

IQ tests have been proven to be incredibly culturally biased, which explains the trend you're explaining.

If they worded all the questions in ghetto speak and situations all took place in shit hole communities, they would likely score better and the spoiled richers would do poorly in comparison.

Trying to do the whole "one test determines people's success" is the utter failure really.

Naw, it's a charming narrative but they have tried exactly what you are talking about and it doesn't work. "IQ tests are reading tests" has been shown to be wrong. In fact, at this point dozens styles of IQ tests have been devised to eliminate bias but black americans always score well below the average. IQ tests designed for people in african countries leave africans at near retard levels. I don't even want it to be true because it scares me and makes me sad but I have to believe it.

It's not that bad, but theres a nationwide system where an employer can look for what you studied and what classes you took.

So they get "Comp. Science" and right slap in the middle is "Video Games Studies". That sets of alarm bells in STEM jobs here, so they either become highly sceptical, thinking you didn't really understand the industry you were aiming for, or they don't call back.

Joys of a small country, I guess. A bit harder in America, where your college might be six states away.

a proper game design class would be a junior or senior level elective where you are tasked to design a complete game and implement it using whatever language/engine. you know, so you actually learn the theory and practice of game design.

this class is "how to be an idea guy 101" with a dash of social/cultural commentary on games.
>>
>>285460117
Yeah but did you actually learn anything from the code or did you just learn "problem X is solved with code snippet A."

CS doesn't hand you prefabricated code on a silver platter, it gives you theory to implement on your end of the picture.
>>
>>285457930
That was such a stupid fucking scene. He just stands there with the tornado wind force not affecting him. God it pisses me the fuck off so much.
>>
>>285460090
Why not both? Because coding has nothing to do with game design. You learn coding in an entire different class. Game design is and should always be all about the philosophy and psychology behind designing games and the player. How do people thing, why do they thing, what gives them a thrill, what makes them happy, what sad.

Coding is nothing but a tool. Any good professor will tell you that day 1. Any fucking moron can learn to code in any language he wants.

Understanding why you code X the way you did is what other classes teach you. If a game design class teaches you how to code, it's nothing but a waste of time since you should already know that. Game design should teach you why some design choices are a good thing while other are bad. They should teach you how to make the games mechanics easy to understand. Most of our brains work in a similar fashion. Game design should be a class that teaches you about that and how you can use the human psychology to make a game that would be understandable and enjoyable.

Coding is something that you should already know. When your algorithms classes start, they don't teach you how to code, they teach you how to solve problems using algorithms, how the algorithms work, why they work. Same shit here.
>>
>>285460672
ha damn yo, most employers just check to see if you have the degree, the more stuck up ones might check your GPA to see if you were actually smart or just sliding by on the side of your pants. (2.5 GPA master race) I would not get hired by the higher end ones. But that's okay because money ain't everything
>>
>>285460674
ok buddy, just don't say you didn't see it coming when 90% of STEM jobs (especially IT) get outsourced

also
>muh passion for work
yeah, unless you're top 0.0001% in your field nobody gives a shit how or why you do something, as long as you do it
>>
>>285461209
And forgot to add, it teaches you all that and how to actually implement it with your already existing knowledge of coding.

So tl.dr. It should teach you how to make a game from your already existing knowledge and why you should do it that way. It teaches you how to use the tool "coding" and not how to code.
>>
>>285455560
What kind of shithole college is that? Was this actually approved as part of the schedule? Is this what education is like in America?
>>
>>285460672

this. I honestly wish my college offered more game design classes where they told you HOW to make good games, instead of just "in this class you will make a game. hop to it!" Like, I'm paying money. I'd like someone who knows a fuck or two to give some pointers, or at least tell the dumbshits their autistic game ideas aren't feasible or even desirable.

instead we just got told "good job" when we did anything, except for the capstone project where they suddenly expected perfection. I wish the rest of the course had been like that last class, with the prof riding our asses and pushing us to make GOOD GAMES, not just shit out some crap. I can learn to use unity and c++ and flash and maya and unreal and everything else on my own time, it's tips about level design and balancing and sthi that I wanted to hear.
