If JRPG's were back on Nintendo, then JRPG's would have been a lot more popular in west.
I do think Sony has a philosophy toward gaming that is better for the industry.
Sony believes in diversity in games and taking creative risks.
Microsoft is primarily focused on realism, gore, violence or catering to American culture (guns and fast cars). It's as conventional, superficial and stereotypically American as you can get. Nintendo is too far in the other direction and once Miyamoto sets a formula in stone, the company rarely if ever strays away from it. That, and there's a total lack of third party and indie support. I will totally agree that none of Sony's IP's match up to the quality of Mario or the significance of Halo. But Sony has a great diversity of IP's. There are super-gory realistic games, but also colorful cartoony games; fantasy and reality; action and strategy; narrative-driven games and there's gameplay driven games. Perhaps the worst you can say about them is moreso directed to some their individual teams rather than the company as a whole.
Sony lacks an icon (especially after losing Final Fantasy). Uncharted may be their best series, but I'd be lying if I told you it was better than Zelda. One thing I praise Sony for though, is their willingness to subvert the ideas of what games are supposed to be. Be it games like Heavy Rain that change the formula or non-games like Journey, Flower, Echochrome, I expect Sony to take risks (and make them pay off). All meanwhile, there are still plenty of conventional games that range from Little Big Planet to The Last of Us to something in between (like Infamous).
I just have an eclectic assortment of different tastes and I don't like being casted in one mold. I think when you're mainly targeting one demographic (20-35 year old men or children), it results in a limited mindset. It's good for a product like a shoe maybe but for a mainstream platform in a large industry, an art form that can reach out to millions of people.

They're a large corporation.
As things get worse they can simply sell off portions of their business and re-focus on what is doing well for them. Right now, their gaming division has the best hope of bringing the company forward.
They really need to work on their televisions though. Too expensive for what you get. I don't know a single person with a Bravia/whatever else they're labeling them as now.
They need to lower prices and increase marketing abroad so they can compete with Samsung/Panasonic/more bargain brand televisions.
Sony has more than enough capability to get out of the slump they're in and thrive. They're just being typical Japanese mindset right now and being purely uncompetitive and traditional in everything but games.
