How do I git gud at this game?
Or any infinity engine game for that matter.
Even on the easiest setting I'm getting my shit slapped.

This happens most of the time with these games. They need much skill and know-how. Just play and you'll learn it.
>>
>>285173180

>trying to get 90+ STR while also getting a high amount of stat points

The worst part of any DnD game.
>>
Read the manual
>>
>>285173312
not as important in baldur's gate since you can get a +1 tome
>>
>>285172816
1) roll until you have at least 2 18s in your primary stats, and at least a 16 in constitution.

2) go for a martial character first. A paladin has incredibly high survivability due to their insane saving throws, but that requires more effort in step 1, due to having a 17 or higher charisma requirement

3) when allocating stats, remember that due to the edition it's based off, an 8 is functionally no different than a 14, outside of their secondary bonuses (I.E, strength letting you carry more)
>>
Roll your stats and roll em again and again until you have 18 in all your needed attributes.

In Baldur's Gate use archers and one summoner.
Summon monsters that distract your enemies, then fire arrows at them and watch them get obliterated.

In Baldur's Gate 2 sorcerors are the best class hands down.

If you run into a very hard enemy chances are he's buffed by magic which you can counter with the right spell.

Always buff yourself before tougher fights.
Don't use spells to heal yourself after combat. Keep those for emergencies.
Use potions and scrolls or simply rest instead.

Rest whenever you can to refresh your spells.

Why the hell would i want to get fucked repeatedly by by AI/mobs, that's not the point of playing singleplayer games ffs.
And who has time for that, even? I don't wanna spend several weeks learning how to play an old game, just play it and get it over with.

How does that work with the additional strength?\

>>
>>285172816
If you're ever in a new area and you're consistently having casualties to normal encounters, turn back and go somewhere else.

You should only ever be at risk of a fatality during unique encounters, or if you're a complete dumbass during a regular one.
>>
>>285173429

That's near the end of the game though.
>>
>>285174565
First half of the game is easy so it doesn't really matter
>>
>>285174565
IIRC, the cave is guarded by Sirens and flesh Golems.
You can handle that at around level 4, if you've got a good enough party
>>
>>285174639

The first part of the game is the hardest since you're insanely weak.
>>
>>285174663
nah that's for constitution and you can get it lvl 1 with an oil of speed
>>
>>285174681
Just like icewind dale and those damn goblin archers
>>
>>285174120
A raw 18 (no exceptional strength) gets +1 to hit +2 damage, 19 gets +3/+7. It's pretty ridiculous going from one to the other. Also 200lbs carry weight to 500lbs, not that carry weight is important.

>>285172816
You're not giving much information here. If your character is built in some horribly crippled way that will be part of it, but make sure you're using the pause feature to cast spells at least, and you should give everyone a ranged weapon to start combat unless you're breezing through an area. Most enemies are melee oriented, in which case you'll get some free hits in or kill some before they reach you, and 6 guys shooting at a mage will usually interrupt their first spell. You only need to go to melee immediately against other ranged enemies, bandits and hobgoblins are generally going to be better archers than your party if not optimized for it. Bows are the best ranged weapon, but not everyone can use them.
>>
>>285173312
use an editor.
>>
>>285176365

You might as well use a 'Win the game' cheat.
Or not play it at all, same thing.

I wanted to start a new playthrough and this time actually import my character into BG2.

What are good stats for a fighter? I managed to roll 90 points, but only 18/76 strength.

That's fine; you'll have 19 strength by the time you start BG2

Why not just use "all 18" cheat? Its the same but faster.

Roll your stats and go with it, as you should in adnd2 you faggots.

what was your best roll ever? i think i once managed to have like 18 everything and 15 one stat.

normally i settle for 18 everything and 3-5 for dump stat

which wouldn't help in the slightest since that isn't even the same ruleset
>>
You just need to learn how to counter different enemies
Use fire against trolls, use pierce magic or dispel against mages, keep protection from evil up against Liches, etc..

Rolling doesn't really mean as much as people claim, I usually just go for 5 rolls max and accept what I get, it's more about strategy in combat and having a solid party
>>
>>285180228
Bretty good. Could use some more WIS for that save vs magic bonus, though.
>>
>>285180228
>5 hours well spent.jpg
>>
>>285180503

I'll put some intelligence into wisdom.
I want to keep the 15 charisma purely out of convenience so I don't have to keep switching to another character to buy stuff.

What's the minimum intelligence? I don't want my character to be a retard.
>>
>>285180662
I don't think you can get lower than 3.
>>
>>285180503

>despite what the manual says, spells do not fail because of low Wisdom, and Wisdom does not give you a magic defense adjustment (as it says in the manual errata section of readme.txt).

Now I'm confused. Does it actually do anything? If that's true I can just have it at 3 and dump the rest into INT for mindflayers.
>>
>>285180228
>>285180503
>>285180662
I'm fairly sure the save bonuses for having high wisdom weren't actually implemented, despite what the manual says, so there's no harm to having a fighter with 3 wisdom in order to max charisma for cheaper stores and have a higher intelligence for mind flayers if you take that character to BG2.

The 2E Infinity Engine games didn't do a good job of giving any meaning to intelligence or wisdom for characters that don't use those stats to actually cast spells, intelligence purely protects you from mind flayer attacks - as said, only comes up in BG2 - and wisdom only lets you cast wish without getting fucked over by genies, which you won't get since you're not a mage.

You would need to have a 17 in intelligence to dual class to a mage or a 17 in wisdom to dual class to a cleric, but that's only an option if you're human, anyway.
>>
>>285180874
Wisdom doesn't, but your will saves do, and they're affected by wisdom.
>>
I went through all of BG2 without even understanding how THAC0 works

I just kinda figures that lower numbers were better through trying different armors

I am a human, so I suppose I could dual class to mage later on. Although I never figured out how that works, and at what level you're supposed to dual class.

thac0 = the lower you get the better

Everything else is pretty obvious once you go through the tutorial.

It all pretty much comes down to knowing how to use a wizard and a cleric well. You're probably hoarding heal spells and damage shit on your casters.
What you want to do is spam control abilities and buffs and let your melee do the damage for the most part. Knowing how to shut down enemy casters will for the most part yield great returns for yourself.
Start using shit like Sleep, Charm, Hold person, Bless, Chant, Remove Fear, Confusion and the like.

Get used to the turn system, it looks like your characters are busy but in actuality this is just theatrics the game works on turns. Use fast casting spells like Magic Missle to interupt spell casts at the start of combat until your melee move into range of casters.
Make sure you equip your mages with slings so when they are out of magic they can still contribute.
>>
>>285181767

It took me forever to figure this out. I was confused as to why armour that should be weaker was actually stronger. I figured it was just higher level stuff.
>>
>>285172816
at lowlevel your whole party should be raping things from range with bows.

your fighters etc should be rocking composite longbows.

even your clerics should be shitting out sling bullets.

it only takes one attack to interrupt an enemy caster and ruin their spell.

until you have the HD to soak hits, you really neeed to avoid melee.
>>
Just have someone dedicated to each role in a party

>1 (or several) frontline tankers
>1 healer
>1 dps
>1 crowd control

Most battles are easy if your crowd control is good enough, at worst you can just cheese it with traps
>>
In BG1 you roll a Warrior as your main character. Congrats, you just rekt the game.
>>
>Rolled Paladin in BG2 because I heard it was easymode
>Got the first quest from the Paladin order (to save the sieged paladins)
>Fucked around for a while before doing it
>They were dead when I arrived
>Expelled from the guild
>I'll never get the god-tier Paladin set

Welp
>>
As for BG2:

1) get mage
2) equip Vecnas robe
3) equip Amulet of Power
4) cast Improved Alacrity
5) annihilate most enemies in <1 second
>>
>>285181246
well if you know what THAC0 stands for which is "To Hit Armor Class 0" it makes perfect sense

that said, I have no idea how anyone can have trouble with this game, I didn't min max for shit and had no trouble getting through it when it came out, I was fucking 12.
Use the pause function and be strategic in your actions if you're still having trouble then this game is clearly not for you, every class is pretty much viable as long as your party balance is generally there.

For me the hardest part was fighting Wizards

Took me long before I understood you had to use defensive buffs like protetct from panic/evil etc.

When you get used to the rhythm fights are generally pretty easy, though
At worst you can just pull back and lead them through traps

If I don't have the Enhanced Editions, which resolution mod is best?

>that said, I have no idea how anyone can have trouble with this game

1) not reading shit before wandering off
2) going straight to the mines
3) not getting companions
4) getting really unlucky against wizards

crowd control is king
equip everyone with ranged weapons
load up your casters with spells like
Entangle, Grease, Web (top tier), Stinking Cloud
throw CC at enemies, kill them from afar, repeat as needed until your fighter gets pic related and now he can melee whilst stood in said CC and not have to worry about a thing.
you can also consider sleep, Sleep is broken in BG1 however is completely useless once you reach BG2

I didn't realize how necessary sidequests were. I didn't go straight for the mines as other anons suggested, but I still had trouble with all those assholes trying to assassinate me.

I haven't put the game down quite yet (I did finally manage to get through the mines), but do wizards just have more trouble in the beginning? Or do I just suck

Doesn't baldur's gate use an ad&d ruleset?
>>
>everyone talking about "wizard" class
I thought there was mage and there was sorcerer? Is wizard a synonym to mage?
>>
>>285185603
Wizard is more about practical magic while mage is more suited for battle iirc.
>>
Baldur's gate 1 is such a chore to go through now for me, 2 is much better.
>>
>>285181209
can't you just easily check by looking at saving throws? or is it a different kind of bonus in 2e?
>>
>>285185719
Is that fan terminology or what? There certainly weren't two separate classes called mage and wizard. There was only mage and sorcerer.
>>
>>285185469
I don't remember, it's possible to multiclass/dualclass a sorcerer?
>>
>>285185973
No, because sorcerer is basically in your blood. It means you're a demigod, dragon, etc. and so it defines you and you can't be anything else or some such. At least that's what I remember from BG2's description.
>>
>>285185358
Wizards are vulnerable for most of BG1, though even early on they are super powerful offensively; since everything has awful saving throws at the start, mass disabling spells like sleep or mass crippling spells like glitterdust are amazing, and allow your melee to clean up easily.

>>285185603
People probably say wizard because of 3E, since wizards there work the same way as mages in 2E; memorization, learning spells from scrolls.
>>
>>285182335
this.
in bg2 you roll a wizard to do the same.

if you want to play both games with the same character, you go figher/wizard dualclass or multiclass
>>
>>285186338
I rolled a paladin in 2, didn't have much trouble with it, though everyone in my party could cast spells.
>>
Who /cleric/ here?
>>
>>285186338
Never managed to have much success with wizards in BG2
Funnily enough my two best playthroughs of 2 were as paladin, and the ranger class called Stalker which I never tried before
>>
>>285186742
>>285186861
everytime i play infinity engine games, i go with a solo character but baldur's gate 2 is so biased towards mages (as opposed to something like icewind dale 1 where i like paladin a lot) that i feel i miss so much spells and items if i don't pick fighter/mage, usually even triple classing. most people recommend kensai/mage which is probably even more broken (but really, any mage is too good).

but you're right that it's still a baldur's gate series, it's not particulary hard and you can play as anything really, even as a solo class
