With the scope on there, you can't unfold the stock, which would be handy for using the weapon effectively on longer ranges.

Far cry just sucks at it, every single named location you visit has a few decorative NPCs, a couple boxes with small amounts of money in them and one or two optional collectables.

At least in games like Fallout and Elder Scrolls there were random pick-up quests and guarded loot cache challenges you would stumble across while wandering around. Far Cry 3/4 is more on rails, if you aren't on a main quest / side quest / liberating an output or tower you aren't doing anything exciting.

It's just the Ubisoft formula.

You have normal enemies, fast enemies, slow enemies with more HP and snipers.
Then you have a billion collectables and a few locations you should visit (outposts, vantage points in AC).
Nothing you do is difficult. But you get rewarded in some way or another after completing something (13/40 outposts liberated! 30 of 100 feathers collected!, etc).
It makes the casuals feel rewarded. Not because they were having so much fun doing it, but because they get a pat on the back telling them they did a good job. This is exactly what CoD does with plastering your screen with points and unlocks.

I just finished this game the other day. It was okay. Not amazing. Some missions were really gun, but most of it was really repetitive and meh. The thangkas or whatever they were called were definitely the best part in my opinion. The game really only gets boring if you do what Yahtzee did and use all the OP unlocks and vehicles to cheese the game to death. There's plenty of gamebreakers put in to keep the casuals happy.

I keep my loadout limited to the D2, Cannon, flare gun and recurve. Playing on hard in the second half of the game with these weapons will get your shit pushed in very frequently if you fuck up the stealth approach, sometimes even by random mobs. Anyone using a silenced sniper deserves their boredom.

I dont use the copters either, they were fun at first but it sucks compared to navigating a 4-wheeler through the woods and having random events drop on your head. Not to mention it gives you the WoW problem of removing the sense of adventure and leaving you with a ticking clock of travel time.

Anyway, it's a fucking sandbox, man. If you don't know how to make your own fun, go play something more structured.

Sure the checkpoints are retarded (basically you can't use cars for transportation so you are limited to running (with retardedly limited sprinting) or buses). It's pretty, challenging enough on Infamous (I don't use quicksaves, only mounted savespots), with enemies that drop you fast, limited ammo, assault guns have iron sights, scoped guns have limited ammo. The AI is a bit blind when you aren't noticed but I guess that makes it not necessary to fight every single checkpoint.

In Far Cry 3 and 4 the only good missions are the ones that have structure, such as the himalayan mountain missions. The missions actually in the overworld are shit because it's the same thing over and over and over again.

I can steal a helicopter and just a giant magnet to pick up a random car, drop it in the exaust tower of a power plant and then call in a carpet bomb. All that might take me 25 minutes or so...but it's a fun 25 minutes of random vidya enjoyment that the Far Cry games lack.

That's EXACTLY my point. The balance on the later-tier weapons is fucked to the point where cautious playstyle is no longer needed, in other words it breaks the AI. Its a single player sandbox game, it caters far more to wish fulfillment than balance or even logic.

Yes, it's an issue with the game, but using them is COMPLETELY OPTIONAL, which means that if you go out of your way to use them even though they're apparently an unfair advantage over the game mechanics, you have to be a precum child to complain that the challenge went out the window.

The loadout I described is made entirely of unlocks, don't think I didn't enjoy that as much as the next guy. The weapons I use are all really strong in certain aspects, but really weak in others. I think this manages to keep things very interesting by giving me a strong chance to succeed but only on the condition that I pay attention to everything at once and take a calculated approach. I specifically set it up so that I would have a very difficult time "going loud" to clear an outpost but could still make it out alive if shit hits the fan.

Other weapons you can unlock are strong as fuck with almost no drawbacks, which means that they can be used almost exclusively to do anything in the game without leaving yourself overly vulnerable. To me, this is just robbing yourself of enjoyment.

Ive never argued that the lack of balance in the weapons is a good thing, but its pretty obvious when you unlock a cakewalk weapon, and the onus lies on you to decide if you want to adjust the skill curve for the entire game then and there.

Biggest problem was Ajay himself.

There were two things that made Jason a good protagonist: he had a clear character arc and clear objectives that he actively worked towards. We see him go from whiny trust fund kid to the edge of bloodthirsty psychopath and then his return from the brink at the last minute. His goals are clear and change as he accomplishes them; save friends, kill Vaas, kill Hoyt, and the missions he does are actually directly in aid of those things.

Ajay, meanwhile, doesn't seem to have any personality at all. I literally can't name a single character trait that he displays. And since he has no personality, he has no character development. Add to that the fact that he lacks the clear and present goals that Jason had. He gets one goal at the start of the game, accomplishes it at the end, and everything else is just a bunch of bullshit as Amita and Sabal string him along for their purposes, and all the while Ajay never displays any fucking opinion about any of it except agreeing with whichever of the two he's talking to.

I understand what you're saying and largely agree, but this game and many past ones have all had the same issue of "ok what do I do now?", FC4 added a couple new gimmicks, but nothing BIG to the core gameplay.

I think something as simple as changing the health system would improve the game. Make it so you have ~15hp, but can't regain it nearly as easily as now. This allows for harder enemies, but not bullshit insta-one-shot-death scenarios that can happen now.
Rework stealth and visual ranges, represent enemy visibility better, use some of those fancy fxaa effects as a way to show the line of sight (in a light, non-obtrusive way).
Make bigger levels. The most fun i've had in FC4 was a night-time mountain top infiltration mission. It played like a level in N64 goldeneye and was great. the game needs more of that mixed in with the open world. What makes it a "world" is that there are destinations, not just roads. In FC3 and FC4, All the landmarks are just hubs, with very limited missions/scenarios around them.
