To be fair, there are actually more Castlevania games that use the style of gameplay than Metroid games that have perfected it
Only Super Metroid when it comes to the 2D games did the best job. Metroid 1 was a clusterfuck and the rest were designed more intentionally linear
But actually I've never seen the other Castlevanias like that. Prefer the old platformer style myself than the whole, "Browse Dracula's castle, see what you like"

There's literally no month where some new shitty "retro" pixelated indie metroidvania-like WITH A TWIST (which tend to boil down to revolutionary ideas like "this one is difficult!" or "this one lets you collect costumes") is not released. In nine out of ten cases, they suck massive dick, for a good reason too.
At the same time not a single one of those actually tries to emulate Castlevania experience even though the series is dead and buried. Fucking why. The closest there is are touhouvanias, and they're following the classicvania design principle anyway.

I tried that underwater one ( Valdis something ) and the controls felt clunky, my characters hitboxes was really wierd compared to the sprite of my character and the story was so abysmal I just gave up 2 hours in
I don't think indie devs have the technical knowledge to code good gameplay first, it always feel like they're trying to make you gobble their shit art/story and slapping retro gameplay from those games of old on top of it
