Makes me think of playing King of Dragon Pass. In the actual game the setting comes from you can be the other races, but in King of Dragon Pass you're just a Clan of humans that mostly deals with other Humans, although other races do exist and are interacted with from time to time. They're alien and bizarre, even ones you think would be recognizable like the Dorfs.

That's sort of the way I framed this, the characters are all Gothic Military conscripts in the border mountains. They have met a few nonhumans like a Dwarven fur trapper and a Halfling messenger but I NPC RP them as being very different from humans in demenor and even physiology, dwarves are very heavy and freakishly sturdy and strong, While the Halfling is eternally optimistic and takes his reputation very seriously. Then of course the enemies are the Gnolls, I have them be utterly deranged animals without a shred of redeeming traits. They work as both comedy since they are mutated and decrepit, but also dangerous and viscous.

I don't specifically have a problem with dwarves and if there is some mechanical reason to play as one I will (i.e. in Dragon's Crown the Dwarf is a whole class not just a race swap with bonus constitution) it's just that I relate better to the tall, noble, lithe, and graceful elf than a short, stocky, rude, alcoholic, and dirty dwarf.
