They were thinking that it would only be used as a way to control the camera. Since that wouldn't benefit from a fully-fledged circle pad, they decided to make it small and close enough to the face buttons so that you don't need to constantly move your thumb.
Lets be honest, the 3DS's circlepad is shit anyway. Having a second one that's exactly the same would be even worse than the regular 3DS.

Thinking of getting a n3ds, can someone tell me what the blurring/ghosting is like? I don't mean the ghosting you get if you have 3D on and move out of the sweet spot, I mean just the typical blur you get from certain types of screens.
Like on my original 3DS XL, a game like Shovel Knight would blur when in motion.

A friend of mine had gotten a n3ds, and at first glance, the c-stick looked and felt awful since there was zero feedback. It was just a nub, and that was really off-putting. Though, when I proceeded to play a game of Sm4sh with it, it was actually pretty responsive. Can't speak for other games, but it felt pretty good for what I played with it. I'd still prefer it have some kind of feedback, but at least it works.

None of that matters, the c-stick is actually great for monster hunter. Assuming it's not sweat soaked to the point where your finger slips off it. Why they didn't texture the nub is a mystery, if not downright retarded. Smooth, flat buttons are just asking for fingers to slip.
It's not that big of an issue at first, because I wipe off the nub frequently, but after 4 hours of hunting it gets noticeably slicker.

I used the nub on a display model, I was really disappointed that it didn't move AT ALL.
But, it works. It's in a decent spot. I really just wish the smaller model came out in NA. While I enjoyed using the XL, I just don't see how I could play it on the go. I commute, and have tons of free time while I'm not at home, so I tend to fill it in with vidya. ob

That was fucking no hassle at all, I don't know what those people had a hard time with.
The only hard part I had was replacing the stock microSD card with a 32GB one because it wasn't clear if the screws actually came off, I sat there unscrewing them for a good 5 minutes.
The 3DS is a fucking prison for Monster Hunter 4 in every way. Its playable, but everytime I start that game I wish it would instead be on Vita. And I don't even own a Vita and only bought the 3DS because I wanted to play MonHun. After seeing toukiden in action im almost certain that MonHun would also look that good. Shit looks like a PS3 game. Instead MonHun4 looks like a 10 years old PSP game on a 240p screen. Its a shame, really.

Pros:
better speakers, very loud
lighter than XL
3D in front is great
left thumb stick has a larger wall so it doesn't rub over it; the original XL had a small wall causing it to rub over and potentially break off
Cons:
power button placement is god awful, awkwardly holding it
3D doesn't work for people behind or beside the one holding it
doesn't fit in my 3DS XL hardcase,, results may vary
wifi slider is no longer present, you have to turn wifi off at home menu
sometimes the lighting cuts in and out annoyingly and randomly, first it's bright then it is like playing on a GB
