Technological advances as in...what? Computer animation? I'm glad there's at least one place in the world keeping 2d Animation alive. The day Japan starts to focus on 3D animation like Pixar and Dreamworks is the day that animation is truly dead.

The Western world always had the tendency to go with the new hot thing and throw the old stuff away. That made it the ruler of the world but also a place with little regard to tradition. It's imo also the reason for grumpy old people.

As much as I love anime, you can point out how a lot of shows during the use of cels had errors. Pretty much every show, from CardCaptor Sakura to Urusei Yatsura had major issues.
But on the flip side, Japan was able to produce 10,000x more animated series than the west. Many of them with totally unique concepts like Mecha, Mahou Shoujo or etc. Not to mention, they were animating 90% of the western shows as well like Simpsons, Duck Tales, Gargoyles and pretty much any of your favorite western cartoons. Plus the huge connection of anime to the gaming industry.
These people who hate on anime are pretty ignorant. The people who claim animation was only good in one specific time period are even more dumb.
