I've only done that once, but most of the time in KOTOR 1 I roll a Kyle Katarn style Jedi, with blasters and lightsabers, so the points I get on Taris go towards that build more or less.

Being a moralfag is pretty much the default option for everything (includes most of the best rewards and an extra party member, with some exceptions later in the game, like that crystal upgrade for your weapon that you can get on an desert sidequest, though I believe you can just ignore the last part of the quest and keep the item anyway). Most of your party members are moralfags too, and the darkfags you can get don't even care about your alignment that much (but moralfag members will bitch about EVERY FUCKING THING if you go full edge master).
Dark side's storyline is only good during the last planet. Before that it is just "oh you are a dick, how amusing" with very few interesting moments.

A lightsaber helps you deflect blasts and cuts through anything. The Force lets you see into the future and to protect yourself or some shit.
