Lance.
Honestly I would say lance is the most 'solid' weapon out of them all, as it allows you to dodge, guard, with an always steady stream of damage ( and always the 'best' damage as it's both slash and blunt, and will use the highest value ). You can also do air attacks regardless of location, something only the IG can do otherwise. If it has any faults, it's that it has no burst damage, something the gunlance makes up for, but in turn lacks the same steady damage output the lance has.
Honestly I'd say play lance if you want to learn a monster in and out, as it allows you every option in the game to respond towards them in turn.

CB is what SA should have been. It's got a nice system to manage and feels cool as hell. Hammer is for dealing satisfying charged smacks and then watching the monster not react to them so it's a bit like GS only less mindless and boring.

At the end of your roundslash (third A move) and at the start of your switch to axe mode animation, your shield is in front of your hunter, if you get hit at this point during those animations, you automatically block it with smaller knockback. When in boost mode, this also creates a large explosion that damages the monster.

Don't pick GLs based solely on their shelling. First it is RAW, then sharpness, then element and shell level/type last. Personally I find that Wide>Long>Normal since full burst isn't exactly my cup of tea (Wide is the best DPS wise though).

Your basic 4 hit combo (Forward X>X>X>X+A) followed with your preferred type of shelling, followed with the combo if the monster is still down.

Elemental can work as long as you know where to hit for it but if you want to do ranged damage I'd suggest an HBG 9 times out of 10.
The only exception being monsters that close distance super fast and aggressively which makes using a HBG way more difficult.

SA is better for cutting tails by far thanks to its insane reach. If you want to cut tails with DB, most of the time you have to trip monsters first. It's not impossible by any means, just more of a hassle.

Can I get some switch axe tips? I've been Insect Glaive all through low rank but I'm getting tired of feeling like I constantly need buffs up.
When I'm in sword mode, should I just be walking around that slow? Or should I only switch to sword mode when I have an opening? I spend most of my time in axe mode.
And when I'm in axe mode, it feels like I rarely have a chance to do much other than the forward x poke. The standing X has a pretty long wind up, so I tend to save it for when I flinch or trip a monster.

Depends how low the tail sits, do the X combo in sword mode if it sits low, if it flails a little higher, do a discharge with sword mode.

For an absolute beginner, I think it's pretty important to try out every single weapon, pick the one you like most (factor in no other criteria when choosing), and then focus on just the one weapon type. Sticking with just one will let you learn the flow of the game and its mechanics much better.

I personally prefer using Bows and Light Bowguns. I like constantly peppering damage and status effects from a safe range, as well as halting a monster's escape.
I have no problem with any of the weapon classes in this game, I'm just happy to see so many players finding their own niche and not drifting towards a "one size fits all" trend of tierwhoring faggots online.
Find the armor and weapon that suits you personally. There's so much customization, you should have no problem designing a play-style that suits your individual strengths.

I generally do meat + something (for attack) or fish + something (for defense). Pick whichever one is most appropriate for the fight. Like go with bread for stuff like damage negation, or veggies (I think) for elemental resistances. Those are the combinations I use, and I haven't done an awful lot of experimentation, so if someone has anything else to add that'd be great. Anyways hope it helps, I didn't get food at all back when I played 3U.

A starred ingredient will give you +10 health per star
A fresh ingredient will give you +25 stamina
Fish + Grains -> Fry
Gives you Defender Hi. Good if you get hit a lot.
Fish + Dairy -> Saute
Gives you good gathering skills
Fish + Dairy -> Steam
Gives you Supercat and Lander which are almost vital for finishing Egg quests
Experiment, find a set of skills you like, and I don't recommend that you eat for the tiny stat boosts that food give other than Stamina and Health
