Basically, I thought Namco just deliberately made a game with unfair and random difficulty spikes, trial and error deaths, a generic non-sensical fantasy-bollocks story, and deliberately shitty controls, so that players that actually learn to adapt to all that shit can just yell 'GID GUD' at those who call it out for being bullshit.Granted, Dark Souls 2 DID slightly improve on this, as I actually got roughly 10 hours of fun out of it before I just fell into the same problems put forward by DS1.
Long story short, I tried getting into it numerous times, but I just don't get the appeal.

Customizing the heroes' abilities and gaining special class bonuses kept combat interesting.
The story-driven campaign maps were pretty good.
