What's the best RTS game ever made?
>>
>>284263526
you just posted my favorite. I'm pretty casual at RTS tho, so I don't think I'm qualified to say what's the "best"

are there any upcoming ones that look cool? Any weeaboo ones?
>>
Warcraft 3
>>
C&C generals
World in conflict if it works
>>
Competitively?

Brood War.

For Single Player?

Homeworld.

AGES OF EMPIRE!
>>
I've only played AoE games, and AoM is my favorite. There's such a variety and the learning curve is steep enough to make you keep playing. Too bad it will never be as popular as AoE2 HD.

I really want a fantasy RTS with modern elements (basically AoM) to come out sometime in the future, but the MOBA craze seems to prevent that.
>>
>>284263526
I quiet enjyoed supreme commander 2 and age of mythology.
I kind of wish there was a synthesis of the two. Like I could have a pretty large scale RTS but with real world units and artillery and actual buildings. I REALLY enjoyed artillery in Supreme Commander. Just the idea that I could, practically from across the map bomb the shit out of my enemies or cover up choke points and stuff, it was awesome.

less micromanagment, so you can manage larger sides, softer battles and map, making it more about macrostrategy

I love turtling in rts's, it's why I can never enjoy multiplayer in this genre. I derive the most pleasure from building massive home bases while fighting off constant enemy attacks. Then after the home base is impregnable just slowly creeping my way forward, using artillery to kill everything in the path of my army.

It's why I love SupCom so much; it gives me shields, walls, turrets and map spanning artillery pieces. Rise of nations is a close second though, just because I love making my territory into massive deathtraps thanks to fortresses causing border expression
>>
>>284270726
>>
>>284265204

Commandos and Close Combat are Real Time Tactics, as there is not really any resource management or base building.

Turtles make me sad, because they will never experience RTS at its best. I think it stems from a fear of committing. You guys just refuse to take risks or commit to anything you won't win by a mile.
>>
>>
>>284269938
I could dig that. I love IG and I really enjoy the 40k lore. never really got into the tabletop game, but the concept and the artwork is rad as hell.
>>
>>284271314
I mean, I won't lie, that's why I do it. But it's also the joys of playing defense. Like, I don't want to attack, I want to have them crash against my walls and defenses. If they win and strategize to take advantage of my weak points, so be it. But I really would rather do that than sort of have defenses and sort of have a military, either full on offense or full on defense. I really enjoy having limited numbers of troops, no home base, and using them effectively to take out a larger target as well. So, I guess it's that I'm simply not smart enough to multitask in rts
>>
>>284275412
>either full on offense or full on defense
Full offense is so much fun. Putting all your eggs into one basket and having it pay off feels so satisfying. That's why I like weird unexpected rushes.

I used to do them in DoW 1 all the time. Like a possessed rush, or hellhound rushes. So much fun.
Or using the map to take advantage of Eldar teleporting builder shenanigans and teleporting Fire Dragons directly into someone's base. That kind of stuff.
>>
>>284276537
Yeah, i can see how it would be great, but I kind of like the comfy feel of basebuilding, doing drills to see how quickly I can get units into positions before the attack, bombarding enemy expeditionary forces, how dare you attack me with anything but your best. I leave scouts though. Feel free to take a look, stratagize around my building placement. That's fine. I just don't want someone to slowly chip away. that's boring. make a grandly orchestrated assault, hitting from all sides, utterly burn the fortress to the ground, but don't just slowly send a few troops at a time to prevent me from repairing things until you break through. Of course, that's why I always do a few walls in layers. In AoM I usually tried to block off mountain passages with a wall, two watchtowers, another wall and then maybe a fortress of some sort. that was just about every entrance into my territory.

See what you want is something to simulate playing with toys as a child, not a strategy game. Might sound harsh, but that's what you want. Playing pretend.
>>
>>284277671
I just enjoy making it liveable. Like, in AoM once I basically got stuck on this very small island that I'd walled in. I had empires on either side passing me, as I'd lost all my shit, but they were both friendly, and I kind of just mined gold and collected resources for them over time til I could afford to send a couple workers over to take a recently destroyed town center

I absolutely love RON. It has this perfect balance of strategy and city/base building. It's also the only strategy game where I can confidently claim I'm at the very least "good". I also like how playing as different civilizations has a real impact on your strategy and it isn't just a cosmetic difference.

>1 faction

The game has no reason to exist when TA and Supcom already do. It's ugly, boring and plays so poorly. The only people that enjoy it are ADD riddled teenagers because it has planets crashing. From the way you type, you are probably one of them. It has done absolutely nothing for the genre.

First few turns are really rough because of the enemy's tech advantage. Rush-research hunters, then armor, then get lucky and spam it all.

Then you conquer the map and start over. You're reduced to one territory and starting income and research and have to conquer an even bigger map.

It's just not worth suffering through, which is a shame, because there was nothing quite like watching the elven envoy sputter when I veto gay marriage and recreational drugs.

I would like to know this as well. I saw a "comfy" horror video game thread the other night. The two don't even go together.
>>
>>284280081
How the fuck did you get to that second sentence while completely missing the three times he mentions SupCom?
>>
>>284281034
>I have no fucking idea who Icycalm is

suuuuure you don't lol. Which is why you had such a resentful reaction to his review that you maybe skimmed for 10 seconds looking for a reason to spew your hatred bile. Because you have "no idea" who he is, lol.
>>
>>284281170
Who said I didn't read on? I wrote the first bit, asking why I should read on, read on, read the bit where he smells his own fart and then stopped.
>>
>>284281282
>suuuuure you don't lol
Where the fuck have you come from? Why are you typing like a teenager? I have no idea who this person is or the issues you are talking about. Is it a /v/ thing? I don't go outside /v/ for video games.
>>
>>284281298
Right. You read on, reading the parts that he mentions SupCom (again, thrice he does so) until you got to that second sentence you commented on. Of course. Makes perfect sense.
>>
>>284281112
Cozy. It's a synonym for "cozy." Short for comfortable. You feel warm, you're at ease, not a care in the world, y'know. I don't know why people have trouble with this, or why comfy threads get shat on all the time. I assume these people have a different first language.

Empire building is comfy, base building only slightly less so.
>>
>>284281384
Whatever, dude. I know what reactions like yours mean and there's nothing you can do to hide it. But keep pretending, I'm sure even you'll start believing your own lies.

>>284281298

I did, because your first comment wouldn't make any fucking sense if you did read on.

>Whatever, dude. I know what reactions like yours mean and there's nothing you can do to hide it. But keep pretending, I'm sure even you'll start believing your own lies.
You want to actually answer my questions instead of assuming I know what the fuck is going on? Why do you think on a small selection of people from some secret club would have a certain reaction?
>>

This guy gets it. I don't necessarily agree with his choices, but it's important to differ between RTS as a super-balanced eSport, and RTS as a super-comfy "spend 2 hours perfecting your base on one map while it's snowing outside" single player game

I don't need to answer your fucking questions, idiot. If you want to learn who the guy is you can go to his fucking site and do so. You are LYING. It is OBVIOUS TO EVERYONE. You are being a FACETIOUS, SLANDEROUS LITTLE COWARD by PRETENDING to not know who this mysterious icycalm person is, right after your resent-filled comment on his review, that you didn't read, saying he's clearly an idiot for thinking something that you assume he does.

This is the end of this conversation. Planetary Annihilation is a work of fucking art, icycalm explains why, and that's all that matters.

Refer back to my example. People looking for comfy horror games. Don't you play horror games to get scared? The RTS I used to play weren't comfy at all. You don't have time to sit back and build up your base. Players online will rush you.

>>
>>284281932
An RTS thread that calls Planetary Annihilation a bad game is not "perfectly fine". It's idiotic retardation, considering how far the game has pushed the genre forward. It's only a matter of time before we see a slew of PA inspired games or straight up rip-offs, with spherical battlefields, layers upon layers of possibility spaces, huge, 3D maps, etc.. Anyone who isn't a fucking fool can easily see what makes the game a masterpiece, and icycalm's review simply makes it that much easier to understand why.

I'm fucking PROUD of "ruining" this thread if you're going to heap slander on the shining beacon leading the RTS genre into the future. I bet you or whoever the faggot was hasn't even played it, or if he has certainly not the way it's MEANT to be played, on a team with huge battles happening everywhere, specific roles delegated to every team member allowing for a thing of beauty when it's seen in action. Calling such a game "bad" is DISGUSTING behavior, and worthy of ridicule.
>>
>>284282054
Why don't you icycalm down?
>>
>>284282153
>Don't you play horror games to get scared?
I play horror games for the atmosphere, is a more precise way to put it. And occasionally the rapid-heartbeat segments will give way to moments of calm, and suddenly it's cozy.

As for RTS, I know the cozy sentiment well. I didn't have online play when I was young, and played against predictable bots over and over again. No stress, no competition, I could play how I want and turtle all I like. Cozy as fuck.

It's also stressful as hell. I was spoiled on the laid-back playstyle by the time I had internet service and it took me a long time to get into deeper mechanics of Warcraft 3, game of choice at the time. There's nothing quite like an online victory, but if I lost - and I often did - I had to watch my base burn and the rank 7 fag on the other team gloat in allchat.

It's easy to imagine how a kid too used to complacence couldn't deal with defeat when he's never had to before. But that's what it was like to be comfortable in RTS.

And then custom games died. Fuck dota.

Depends, when it comes to competitive, my favorites were Broodwar and Warcraft 3. To me starcraft 2 was a early 2000 game with a new paintjob.

best for singleplayer, has to go to age of empires and age of mythology. That comfy feeling is great.

Overall, my all time favorite is Broodwar/Starcraft because the online UMS community was my childhood, by the time i got a decent enough rig to play online for WC3 it was dying off, and i never made the same types of friendships I did with Wc3, mainly because during that time almost 80% of the community didn't know how to reconfig their shit to be able to host.

Star Wars EaW is great as well, and BFME series, though BFME was never comfy and had a mediocre online so it never lasted long with me.

What's the point of talking about League of Legends, Heroes of Newerth, other ASSFAGOTS games or even other genres, when there won't ever be a remotely as good game as Dota 2. I don't understand why you people bother arguing or having discussions about any other game, there won't be a game as comparably good as Dota 2 for another 5-10 years.

I'll put my credibility on the line here, and say that Dota 2 is the best game of all time. By "best game of all time", I refer to artistic and technical production, and gameplay design iteration (since Dota is arguably one of the most iterated upon computer game).

From a technological rendering standpoint, it's visuals may not be king, but the art assets, overall art direction, and particle effects are the best that I have ever seen. The most excellently, tastefully produced art that I have ever seen in a game.

The voice cast is the best I have ever heard, Dota 2 has Duke Nukem (Jon St. John), Cortana (Jen Taylor), Nathan Drake (Nolan North), the entire L4D cast, the entire Half-Life 2 cast, the entire Team Fortress 2 cast, and GlaDOS from Portal.

Let's actually get down to the gameplay. No two games I have ever played have felt similar to the point of feeling rote. Each and every hero in Dota 2 is distinctly different from another, offering a uniquely encapsulated experience with well-defined goals for every single playable character in Dota. Because every hero feels so profoundly unique, every game that I play of Dota 2 feels fundamentally different in a way that League of Legends is not able to reproduce.

I could go on, and on, but at this point I might as well just make a video essay. Also, I have some Dota to play. Dota 2 is seriously a game I could play ad-inifnitum, and never get tired of. Why bother with any other game?

Why speculate about other games in the genre, and other genres, when the best game ever made is already here?
