Depends on what exactly you mean.
If by more diversity in developers well no one cares if you have the skills to work in the industry, no one will turn you down for race or gender, if you have what companies look for you got a job, just like any tech field.
If by more diversity of in game characters, one blame focus groups and publishers, games in general have had a wide cast of good characters both human and non-human.

Though I understand where you are coming from, the problem is that when you start differentiating between forced diversity and "authentic" diversity, the people who are prejudiced and against any diversity at all (whether they're conscious of this bias or not, and yes humans have lots of unconscious biases) will hide behind the forced diversity argument in order to not seem like prejudiced fuckwads. You're just giving them an out.
We should certainly be critical of poorly written/conceived of games that hide behind diversity as a justification for their relevance, using it as a prop to stand themselves up on instead of relying on their gameplay. But in these cases, all we have to do is point to the gameplay itself and discuss how it isn't good- the only time to bring diversity into the equation is when someone else uses the diversity as some sort of selling point for the game, we can dismiss it as not being relevant to the quality of the game itself. It will be easier for us to dismiss the diversity as a positive aspect of a game when there is more diversity in games in general, because it will make these weaker entries that rely on diversity as a crutch less justifiable by the people who would use it.
Diversity shouldn't be a selling point for a game, but there should be more of it in games.
The people who are demanding more diversity are the ones who are preventing it.
