Mother 3 is emotional as shit man. I think seeing the characters grow up and going on a journey with them, seeing their hometown go from a peaceful village to a chaotic mess before being abandoned entirely, and being part of the experience makes it more touching. Mother 3 the novelization wouldn't really work because the main character barely talks and a lot of things are meant to be left for the player to discover, not explained outright. Because games require input from the player, if they've gone to the effort of beating them, they'll be emotionally invested in the characters by the end; even if the characters really aren't that memorable.

It's not about Sarah or even Joel. It's the entire concept of a father losing his daughter in his arms. That's something I can empathize with. It showed who they were and their love for each other. When she died, I wasn't sad because "Oh no, I liked her" I was sad because "Oh no, that's emotionally devastating"

Because we were all 12 when the first one came out and the idea of Disney and square collaborating was really novel.

Really, the first game was great. The plot was pretty silly, but it didn't take itself seriously and it had a lot of fun with the mish mash of disney and square.

Once the second game came out and it turned into ORIGINAL CHARACTER DO NOT STEAL edgy mcorganization woop doop belts and zippers plot twists everywhere it turned to shit, but the first game was still good.

But your emotions have little to do with the writing and everything to do with the presentation. This includes music too. One of the biggest parts.
>>
>>284195773
I can ALMOST say the same.
The thing is, nothing that is SUPPOSED to be sad has ever made me cry. But when something is so well made, so (literally) epic, and completely immerses me, I start to tear up. Never cry. But when I first finished Blade Runner I had a tear rolling down my cheek. Same with Half Life 1.

>>
>>284195504
not really, the way the storytelling works in that part of the game makes it actually have the player invest some sort of attachment to the character by making you play as her. But Mass Effect 3's intro? Yeah, that was cheap as hell because there was NO reason to be invested in nameless earthboy plscrie.

In TLOU it makes you play as sarah, who you get a really good feel of what her life was like. You can go around and observe everything she was as a person and her family and get attached just from that alone. When shit goes to hell you really feel those dark emotions you would never want to feel. It's not cheap and if it is, they fucking got me good then because i'd never want that shit happening to my daughter.

One of the first sidequests in this game is a fairly simple "my pet is lost" things.
Old man is worried. Dog has been gone for 2 days. Wants you to find him and bring him home. Find dog beaten to death by shades. Everyone's sad. Life goes on. Shit happens. Dog has a weird plant in his mouth. Might as well bring it back. Old man's gone. Knock on the door. Young man steps out. Grandpa died. Heart failure. No medicine since the shades went rampant and stopped trade routes. That plant? That's used to make the medicine. Quest ends. Collect rewards.
Then it hits you.

The quest wasn't "Please go to the next town and bring me some medicine so that I can live."
It was "Please find my dog so that he can live."
Two undyingly loyal friends who would die for each other.
And they did.
And there was nothing you could do to prevent it.
Welcome to Nier.

>>
>>284202085
Are you legitimately autistic? Because the fact that you can't comprehend someone caring about that just because other people also died in the past seems to indicate a serious lack of understanding of others.

In light of this, I will explain. It turns out that many people find the death of people as an inevitable result of their own decisions, of people whose very job places them at a very high risk of death, are often viewed as a significantly less terrible event than the death of those who are living ordinary lives, expected to be free of significant risk. Additionally, many find the death of a child to be much more tragic than that of an adult.
>>
>>284202738
Yes, that explains it. I'm sorry.
Truly, Commander Shepard, a man who has been surrounded his entire life by death and war, would lose his mind over the death of a random child because it is a random child and not a random adult. That makes it so tragic and a new and traumatic experience for him that a mental breakdown is the only conclusion for him, despite everything that he saw and underwent in his Spectre training and the horrors he was forced to witness and commit in the previous games, including fucking dying.

That's not the point, anon - the child becomes a symbol for the rest of the galaxy. The child in and of himself isn't what Shepard feats - it's the chance that billions of innocents just like him might share the same fate.

It's the very same reason that the Crucible latches onto this one memory in particular - when they could have chosen Shepard's romantic interest, or Anderson, or whatever. The kid represents the galaxy in Shepard's rapidly flaying mind, and the Crucible uses the visage of the child to manipulate Shepard into the green ending.

It's an allegory - they're a common literary technique, anon. You clearly have no concept of that, however.

I can't believe how badly I need to defend Titanic from people who said it was an awful movie just because there was a romance plot involved. As much as what came after this scene sucked, admit that all cried your eyes out to this

>That's not the point, anon - the child becomes a symbol for the rest of the galaxy.
Go fuck yourself. Not even reading the rest of that bullshit.

It's one of the few games I'll defend that kind of writing. The actual story is very good, you just have to force yourself through the awful dialogue at times.

I haven't cried at a film since I was like 10.some games have come close. I remember I nearly cried when Rolland died in borderlands 2. he was my charterer in the first game and I had spent well over 20 hours with him. it brought back nostalgic memories of the first time I played bl1. didn't feel right to ever play as him again...

Even if games don't make you cry there's still plenty of emotions you can experience during gameplay. Some of them are more or less unique to games as a medium, too. When's the last time a movie, book or painting made anyone feel genuinely frustrated at their difficulty but then gave them a sense of accomplishment once they got through them?

Well there are movies out there that are considered "hard to watch," if that counts.

Because they are FUN ACTIVITIES, not art in the classical sense. Only Anita Sarkisian and that troop think they're supposed to be art.

The child was a fucking allegory. Is it really that hard to understand? Call it hamfisted, call it manipulative - but your whole fucking argument about the brat is explained by the fact that he's an allegory for the rest of the galaxy.

aye. or like the feeling of hopelessness in dark souls or guilt in the walking dead... you couldn't achieve these emotions with any other media.
>>
>>284204584
They can call it whatever the fuck they want. I'll call it dumb fucking bullshit making no sense in the context of the character whatsoever.

Pic very related ;_;

Yeah but that's usually because they're dull as fuck.
>>
at this point everyone has felt it all through substitution (constant inundation with music, tv, movie's video games, anime) so now it's all just cliched, expected and show horned to the point of '*yawn* when do i get back control of the video game'

though there are still some gems out there have can pull at your mind strings

You're forgetting revolver ocelot in that mix

Wrong, games can very much be art in the classical sense. However, retards like Sarkeesian and her ilk thinks that progressive themes and minimal gameplay is what makes games art.
