At least from a PC gamer's perspective the 90s were superb, tons of classic games and lots of whole new genres were created. With consoles the early 2000s might be better, but I think that the most definitive PC games, the kind of games that come first to my mind when I think of good PC games, were made in the 90s.

I grew up poor, never had a SNES or a 64. Instead I had a Mega Drive and an old 486 with a bunch of demos, I used to troll on ICQ and Napster before I knew trolling was a thing.
I never saw why 2D platformers became so popular, I never got into Sanic / Wonderboy / Alex the Kidd and they had shitty or non existent save system. As soon as I played Spyro however I was hooked.
The best JRPGs were on the SNES but overall the Ps2 was the best era for them. They've fallen so much lately, I always wanted to see them with really good graphics but most of them just seem lacking.
Doom / Quake / Duke were fun as fuck, I did enjoy Battlefield 3 too but I wouldn't rush out to get the yearly rehashes. I sort of prefer Military shooters over WW2 shooters but over all I'm not a big fan of shooters.
Stuff like AssCreed feels too easy, I like the way they look though I don't like their whole 900p bullshit.
Also feels like there is a lack of good adventure games, as I said I missed out on Nintendo so I'm playing Zelda OoT and I see why its popular as it is.

The 90s was a golden age for a lot of things, but not really vidya. Especially in the US, if you were a 90s kid living in the US that was their golden age. Their economy was sky high, gas was ass cheap, the NSA wasn't shoving their noses up everyones asses and the sand monkeys weren't that big of an issue.
It all went to shit in the 2000s when our economy died and everyone became paranoid because of the twin towers. BUT the early 2000s had some of the best games ever made, I guess theres a tradeoff between good vidya and turmoil. Still, the 90s had some great entries, and the PC market was making a real mark with all their entries, mostly RTS and FPS. I was born in 1992, I lived to experience the height of the 90s and I can safely say it was way better than the last decade and this one. It's not nostalgia, the world has just gone to shit. Maybe that's why the teens are clinging to the 90s because they realize how crappy everything became. Hopefully I'll experience another golden age in my lifetime.

I was a kid in the 90s (born 89) and played mostly with the computer. Might be because I learned to read early and my dad was there to help me but I got the hang of installing games and playing even a bit more difficult games like WRPGs pretty fast. Even the CLI OS's were pretty easy to get a hang of. I also wasn't the only kid like that I knew.
But yeah PC elitism really only came in the later 90s I guess because that's when the PC really shone with its great exclusives which could actually use the superior hardware unlike modern games.

Well, where I live in the early 90s were the biggest economical slump in a long time and the economy never really recovered (I don't live in Japan btw) so the general mindset is that the 90s were a very unpositive time. But on the other hand, the 9/11 wasn't that big of a deal because it happened in America and America is far away. Early 2000s was positivity and economical growth.
But I still think that the 90s were the best era for gaming simply because of the innovation. Lots of new genres, early 3D games and lots of great classics like Doom, Looking Glass Studios, Ultima etc... Tons of innovation and general excitement everywhere. Especially the WRPG's peak is in the 90s. But again, this is a PC gamer's perspective.

Doom, Command and Conquer, Starcraft, The Sims(came out in Feb 2000 but I still count it as 90s), Warcraft, Myst, Diablo, Age of Empires, Populous, Theme games.
A lot of good entries for the PC, I was 8 years old by 2000 and I played a lot of those games by that period. Good thing I had parents who funded my interest in computers.

I was born in 85. What I enjoy most about my experience growing up is I felt like I got to witness the huge shift in technology. I still wish I was born a few years earlier to see it more fully but I remember starting off doing everything the 'old' way before technology (typewriters, libraries, etc.). I also got to enjoy the constant upgrades of video games from NES to n64 which was incredible to live through.

I was 7 when it went down, I lived in a small town in alberta, canada.
I remember all the schools closed early, and just about every place of business in town closed for the day to go home and watch the news. I wasn't really old enough to understand what was going on, but my parents wouldn't let me leave the house and ride my bike in the neighborhood for some reason.
