Well, everyone knows that shit like Action/Adventure are bullshit genres with way too wide a range. So sure.
>>
No. Fuck "journalists" of a field who can't even be bothered learning the lingo.
Yes, I'm still mad that somehow 3D brawlers are somehow called "hack'n'slash" despite the name having been clearly coined before for monster killing-oriented RPGs, including but not limited to Diablo and Icewind Dale.
>>
>FIRST PERSON SHOOTER
FPS is a staple acronym for those who love shooting people in the face but are keen to elevate themselves just above the masses. No, I don't just play Call of Duty – to be frank I like my Gun Murder Simulators to be a little less gauche. Fuck it, let's just go with that one, shall we? I came over here expecting to settle on Shooty Bang Bang Bang Bang Bangers (SBBBBB), but I've flippantly decided that it's probably for the best that we all just accept the horrifying reality that this is what our brains have decided that we like doing. Gun Murder Simulator doesn't beat around the bush – if anything it climbs into the bush and starts tearing it apart from the inside, like that bit from Alien re-enacted in a local garden centre.

>Sit there face-frumping at me all you want, but when was the last time you played a shooter where you weren't being tasked with killing other stuff? Robots might seem like a strong get-out clause for now, but give it 20 years and stuff like that will see you ground into meat-fuel by our new overlords.

>It's certainly weird that we're culturally obsessed with luxuriously shiny digital worlds that let us shoot things that look like people in the head, but in lieu of any better sociological explanation I think it's time that we accept that humans are simply awful and weird.

What the fuck is this person going on about?

Which genre names are 'bad' and what are the 'good' genre names?

'Action-adventure' is a bullshit catch-all term that could do with some granularity, but apart from that I don't see the problem.

There's always going to be blurred lines between genres in any medium, that we have to accept, simply changing the genre terms doesn't fix it and doing away with genres altogether is even less helpful than having imperfect genres.

So the question stands; what genre terms are better than the ones we already have?
>>
if I call a hooker a sexworker, she's still a hooker. So, no keep it as it is.
>>
>>284070853
Would "sex worker" imply she is doing it legally and ethically? Hookers aren't legal.
>>
Some genre names are terrible, but it's better than having extremely granular genre definitions so everyone comes up with their own special snowflake genre.
>>
JRPG and WRPG are pretty shit genre names, what country a game comes from doesn't suddenly change the gameplay and mechanics of it.
>>
>>284070853
>>284071012
If you videotape said hooker with the intention to sell the videos you can call it a porno and it would be legal.
>>
>>284071012
'Hooker' and 'sex worker' mean the same thing, and in some places it's legal and other places illegal.

Metroidvania is an awful term
>>
>>284070243
I hate how people treat "hack and slash" like its own genre, just because you happen to be hacking and slashing. Hacking and slashing doesn't denote any gameplay elements.
>>
>>284071126
At least it carries some vidya history with it. What's a better genre name for metroidvanias?
>>
>>284070243
the article is so shit; are we gonna take this seriously?
>>
>>284071219
They're just a subgenre of platformers
>>
>>284071219
Funny, I thought of it. Closest I could find was "open-world platformer", which is basically the same, without the games that came from it. And without the RPG elements (which weren't really a thing in Metroid).

Not answering the question.

Not bad. Metroidvanias aren't really 'open-world' but at least you're offering ideas.

Doesnt help for underage hookers

Yes, saying a game is a third person shooter says nothing about the tone of the game and implies splatoon and gears of war are in the same genre we should have the regular conventions that books and movies do then add the gameplay genres on top of that.
>>
>>284071339
video games are just a subgenre of games

Gee that's funny and witty at the same time, and popculture references, this guy knows his shit :^)

>Not bad. Metroidvanias aren't really 'open-world' but at least you're offering ideas.
They're about as "open-world" as PS2-era GTA, which locked you from going at some places until a certain point in the story.
But I agree, it's a really lacking name. Especially since one could argue that collect-a-thon are effectively "better" open-world platformers.
>>
>>284071567
It does answer the question. They're platformers. Call them platformers.

But if you want a more specific name, maybe non-linear platformers? Sandbox platformers? Single-world platformers?

no

Yea we should call rpg's 'strong womyn simulators' and strategy 'confusing for me'
>>
Why do people get so worked up about genres?
They're just a simple indication so people can know what to expect.
>>
>>284071630
>game puts camera behind back and allows you to shoot people which is primary gameplay mechanic
>not third person shooter

Fucking tard
>>
Absolutely. They are completely useless as they are now. I mean just look at MOBA. Seriously, what the fuck does this shit even mean this could apply to almost every multiplayer game.

Really Confusing For Me

MOBA = AFS

Ass Faggot Simulator?
>>
Absolutely. Anyone that thinks "Adventure" or "Fighting" are good names for genres doesn't deserve to play them.
>>
>>284071126
Weird when there are Metroidvanias that are better than Metroid and Castlevanias.
>>
>>284070243
Not going to read the shitty article but yes, genre definitions have always been a mess. Especially since many games end up having a mix of different mechanics. The entire distinction between jrpg and wrpg needs to be thrown out the window.
>>
>>284071832
>It does answer the question. They're platformers. Call them platformers.
This is stupid, all metrovidia games have the same features that distinguish them from regular platformers

It'd be like merging RTT with RTS , 4xs with grand strategy, action games with hack n slash and beat them up,etc
>>
>>284072465
Would it be safe to just designate "turn based RPGs" as simply "RPGs", while real time RPGs as "Action RPGs"?
