You have to take everything by a case by case manner. Back in the day you could get amazing expansion packs like The Conquerors for aoe2, but you could also get shit on like buying one of the dozens of Sims expansions. Sometimes you'll get DLC that doubles the longevity of a game for a third of the original price and sometimes you'll pay the price of the game over again for something that doesn't add to the experience. If you're smart with what you buy you're never have to complain about getting ripped off.

Correct, If a DLC adds content to the game which adds to the replay value of a game then the DLC is good. Take for example Evolve, with the day one DLCS; Day one DLCs games for cosmetic stuff or content is like a big fuck you to the fan, Because it was content that was cut from the retail release.
