Level design is also inferior, well at least compared to pre-Lordvessel DaS. DLC fixes that though.
Scholar aims to fix the story issues by retooling the item descriptions and giving you the ending you always should have gotten since the DLC.

If your build requires more than 3 rings, you either need to:
1) Get gudder
2) rethink your shit build
I have a build that uses full turtle knight set, gyrm greatshield, shield crossbow, sanctum shield, and butterfly shield and I still only NEED 3 ring slots to be viable and have fast roll.
The forth slot is changed out regularly depending on what I feel like. Old sun ring for shits and giggles, or evil eye ring, ring of the living, white phantom ring, etc.

Scholar of the First Sin fixes that, more or less. You can now opt out of collecting souls by wearing a certain ring. It's not a perfect fix, but it gets the job done.
