The real reason is that the west coast port strikes have choked out the supply lines to North America, so they had to cancel the non-XL model. They didn't want to have so much shit to try and push through the choke, most of which would just sit on the docks in crates instead of being sold (like what is happening to amiibo right now). The fact that the XL model alone is having stock issues is just another testament to the real issue.
They can't actually SAY that that's the reason, though, or else they'll give the strikers power and people will be mad at Nintendo.
Once the strike dissipates and things return to normal, we'll probably see the non-XL come through and the amiibo stock problems start thinning out. It's just too bad the huge delay is probably going to deprive us of a lot of these cover plates; they aren't going to release game-specific ones like this long after the game's come out and run its course. I hope I'm wrong about that, though.
