Are casuals more important to the industry than us hardcore gamers?

Is making a thread about a person that has nothing to do with videogames a good waste of your time?
>>283847696
I fucking hate this guy.
How the fuck is he editor in chief of a major vidya site?

I am the very definition of useless. My existence actively makes the world a worse place.

I don't him them. You don't like them. But still, Polygon is a major video game site.

I assume he's talking about the type of posts we see here on our beloved /v/, but that description describes the SJWs perfectly. And I assume he's cool with those faggots.
>>283847696
if he thinks his audience is shit and there is a well-adjusted audience why doesn't he switch?
oh right, because he's a raging twat that nobody likes

Aren'twethe angry fringe?
I honestly believe clickbait bloggers browse /v/ as an inspiration for their next articles, most of them are exactly the same as shitposts you can find around here

We're one angry fringe, just not the one he panders to.

yea, I dunno if he understands he just commited a grand and terrible Irony with that fucking statement.

I think of it like this, he's either myopic to the point of being basically retarded or arguing in extremely bad faith.
Either way, Ben Kuchera is somebody I will never take seriously.

from a businesses stand point, yes. casuals will buy anything if you market it hard enough.

>>283850758
Oh this is bullshit.
Casuals play games on smartphones with controls I, apparently a hardcore gamer, can't even be bothered to learn. Casuals play some p2w facebook games that require you to log in every few hours or so and look after your shit like a madman, which I don't even have time for.
What casuals don't do is line up to buy Gone Home or Revolution 60. The audience for these games is gaming press and friends of the developers, sometimes one and the same.
Yes, casuals buy FIFA and CoD
Yes. Casuals have always been the lifeblood of the video game industry. Without casuals, video games would still be university projects.
>>283847696

>>283847696
"Industry", who gives a shit, it's a money thing that some gel-haired douche in a boardroom will figure out. But for gaming press, core gamers are so much more important that it's hilarious, for the simple reason that CASUALS DO NOT READ GAMING NEWS. Or articles. Or reviews. Or interviews. Or fucking anything. They are casuals, meaning they have only a passing interest in the hobby.
It's almost sad how clueless the press are on the fact that they're shitting on the only people who could conceivably keep them fed.
>>283847696
>Ben Cochoera
>not a complete retard
pick one
why do you keep giving these people attention
From a companies perspective it makes sense, catch as many buyers as possible, that's why the robocop remake was pg-13 when the original was so brutal and ultraviolent it needed to be toned down to even make it in the theaters, pg-13 means a bigger prospective audience.
But this is why when a game comes along no focused on that market I love it so much, assetto corsa is made by a small team with making an advanced physics model and high user customization and modding being the goal, and I love it, most people who aren't into simracers won't make a single corner with the aids off
>>283854609
This should be drilled into Kuchera's thick skull by whoever signs his paychecks.
>>283850758
I rarely get angry at retarded things sjw post, but this got me. These people genuinely think anyone who disagrees with them are frat boys who play cod all day.
Casuals are not long term consumers. They will go away when the games they paid for aren't the flavor of the year anymore.
Just see the Wii -> Wii U situation, only people who bought that was a portion of Nintendo hardcore fans. See the PS4 for the reverse, it's the new cool thing so everyone got it day one.
If you rely on casuals, sooner or later someone is going out of business.
>>283854609
The entire reason the media is going HAM on this issue is because they want to shift their audience to the casual market.
Core gamers realize it's a cesspool, so they're moving towards other venues for news.
Casual gamers couldn't give less of a fuck, and when they do get their news it's from YouTube celebrities.
So in a desperate effort to gain any audience whatsoever they're throwing all of their weight towards casuals.
>5 kids
Someone out there willingly got impregnated by Kuchera 5 times. Maybe less if twins are involved, but still.
>>283854942
Extremism 101.
>Somebody said something they don't agree with
>Sort them into a category of people they don't like
>Now they can safely ignore them instead of giving any consideration to their viewpoint
>>283847696
More important? No.
More profitable? Certainly.
>>283855209
They're not cuckchera's biological children :^)
Casuals can bring in bigger payday, but unlike Hollywood who learned they just have to suck it up if their million-dollar production was an absolute flop the publishers and developers in the vidya industry whine like bitches because they feel ENTITLED to any and all shit that comes falling out of their assholes to be hailed with massive profitability and criticial reception calling it 100/10 God's Gift to Gaming "it was okay" -IGN.
Ben Kuchera is a tabloid styled writer. His goal is to drive an industry into the ground, turn it into something that is no longer sustainable; then move into another industry where he can do the same.
His actions don't promote betterment of the industry, only serve to create conflict and vilification of others, so that there's a constant state of war between two sides. This in turn breeds confusion, which the greater industry can then take advantage off to generate hype left and right with progressive "We won't do it again" token pieces, but then fuck up whenever and get away with when they can.
It's a business, they have this shit down to an art.
>>283847696
There's a difference between a casual and someone with no standards at all.
>>283854942
It's much easier to hate someone when you break them down to be unrelateable to you.
It's why people always describe shooters as "loners" and other stupid labels. It's because people find it easier to hate others when they have a nice label on them that doesn't read "They're just like anyone else, including me".
>>283847696
>pretty much every AAA game caters to casuals
>casuals cry that the remaining niche games don't
Looks like they need tocheck their privilege.
>>283855437
Yeah you never hear "but think of the poor grips and lighting techs this movie deserves your money they're trying hard!" like you do about games
>>283848530
Not really.
IGN is a major gaming site.
Polygon ain't shit.
>>283855682
Casuals don't play AAA games. Destiny and Call of Duty aren't casual games.
Angry Birds and Candy Crush are casual games.
Casuals don't use dedicated gaming hardware. They use their phone or play online on their macbook.
I don't care if they are "more important" as long as the games I like still get made. even if I'm a smaller part of the market I'm still a part of it after all. but then again this is just another thread to draw more attention to shitty internet personalities
>>283847696
>work spread across 3 different sites
>because he got kicked out of 2
why is this a good thing?
>>283847696
Why do people throw their kids around like a cross to bear?
>Decide to have a family
>LOOK AT HOW HARD I WORK BECAUSE OF THE LIFE I CHOSE
>>283853586
An olive branch is an admirable thing to do, it's an appeal to humanity and sensibilities we hope is in everyone.
Unfortunately in this case, neither side would go for it.
The Game Journos would reject it, because they already view the gamers as enemies, why would they apologise?
Then the Gamers, they suspect that the Game Journos full well know what they're doing is wrong and is just to line their pockets or further an agenda, they've no interest in changing their behaviour because they profit from it.
>>283855849
>casuals don't play AAA games.
false
>casuals don't use dedicated gaming hardware.
false
quickly someone post japanese developers again, we need something good to feel in this thread
Ben Kuchera has more readers than ever before, he said it himself. You can't kill him /v/, he's too powerful for you to defeat.
>hurr durr muh hobby must remain pure
Shut up, fedoras. Everyone plays video games now. Everyone. Casuals deserve their games just like you get your artifically difficult japanese shit. Just because we get our games doesn't mean you won't get yours.
>>283847696
Yes, that's why the market is based around them
>>283856652

>Pretending to be a casual on /v/
The fact you're on /v/ is proof you aren't a casual.
>>283856761

>>283848148
He isn't. He's editor of their opinion section. Which tbh he's the opposite of who you would want there. Dude doesn't understand what makes a good opinion piece and had been letting any dumb idea for an op ed fly as long as its by the staff. He's a big part of why Polygon isn't just games anymore. Him and Dave Tach and the McElroys probably meet up in Cincinatti to butt fuck.

Seeing people do what 4chan did a few years ago always makes me laugh. People give this site and its users so much shit, but in the end they always end up waddling down the same path unaware that it was their bogeymen that laid it down for them.
>>283857607
its because 4chan is an easy target.
id rather have people like that think its some shit place, when in fact its honestly the only place on the internet where talking about video games and discussions are even worthwhile.
And if /v/ is the golden star at this then I guess that goes to show just how fucking horrible everything else really is.
>>283856987
i'm pretty sure bald said it greatly pained him to let kuchera go in the post where he announced they were shutting down the penny arcade report
i really want to believe he was being polite
>>283852058
Boy I love all these accusations and no source!
Okay so on one hand people like Kuchera want fun to be abolished because they want something else, and anyone who says "They're just games shut the fuck up" is a deeply misogynistic right wing think tank drone.
But!
If you're a casual gamer, then FUN IS ALL THAT MATTERS THEY'RE JUST GAMES SHUT UP
>>283853264
But Ken, I'm not interested in fixing it, I just want to make fun of all the salty Susans in gayman journalism as they try to soothe their white guilt.
Has a game ever lost consumers due to being too hard?
>>283858243
dark souls, hardest game ever made
>>283858340
oh come on, i'm being serious
>>283847696
Here is the thing,
No one would claim hardcore gamers are lager then the casual crowd, but something these chuckle fucks don't seem to get is this...
1) We can have both casual and hardcore games, anyone who says we should focus on one or the other that isn't part of development can go fuck themselves.
2) The causal market may be bigger, but its not the safest option because in comparison to the hardcore crowd, casuals don't care or pay attention to video game related business, they buy based on what their friends or TV commercial says they should buy.
3) Anyone who complains about "entitled" gamers while siding with the SJW fucktards they need some serious self awareness, which Ben has shown to have none.
>>283847696
>the idea that press should ignore the millions off happy well-adjusted gamers to pander to the entitled, constantly angry fringe is madness
THATS EXACTLY WHAT YOU DO
ITS LIKE IM TAKING CRAZY PILLS
Casuals are the majority of gamers and they just want to have fun. We're just the vocal minority.
>>283858483

>>283856987
I wish I could do that with 4chan. I've hated this place for nearly a decade now but I have nowhere else to go.
>>283858243
Doubtfully, most harder games tend to go under the radar for the majority of people and unless they get recommended by a friend it's just another game they never bothered with because it didn't get a TV commercial.
