Beasts possessed the traits of god: changed physical form, magic and miracle manipulation, and a thirst for souls. At first they were contained, but as thirst and numbers grew, they began to hunt, and being human, a paleblood, became deadly. Yharnam collapsed, and people became beasts just to survive.
The church as it still exists creates hunters to kill the beasts, but the only difference between the two is power; hunter and beast become the same in time.
