Persona 4's social links writer is a fucking hack. First of all, they're all really generic and boring, there's nothing crazy and out there like the MMO link in 3, aside from Fox but that's not a real link.
Second of all, they are all overly dramatic bitching. There's no balance whatsoever. Yeah, I get that you need SOME drama but for fuck's sake I don't WANT to hang out with these fucking nobodies if all they do is bitch at me.
Lastly, the way the social links don't affect the story is really felt in 4. Characters act completely different in dialogue scenes despite having supposedly matured or gotten over their problems in the link.
It's not as apparent in 3 because of the timing restriction for links, as in, by the time you can start most of them the characters have gone through their story arc.
Plus, there's way less party member links so there's that.
At the end of the day, I had much more fun alternating e-sexing my teacher in an mmo, hanging with a drunk old monk, hanging out with a dying book writer, an old couple, a classmate who wants to fuck the teacher, a cult member, etc than I ever had hanging out with a bunch of high school crybabies and a few bitchy adults.

P4 Character development begin and ends when the cast face it's own shadow.After that the character will remain the same for the entire game.
Junpei development goes on for the entire game,he's problems with the MC,insecurity issues and feelings for chidori are things that keep developing/happening and changing for the entire story.
He's resolve is only settled in the last month of the game and the same is true for a lot of P3 characters.

I liked the characters in P3 more, both the S Links and your team mates. The actual story wasn't all that amazing in either game, but it felt semi coherent in P4, as opposed to whatever the hell was going on in P3. Gameplay in P4 felt like an upgrade from P3, though I personally never had any issues with having to order team mates in P3FES. I also didn't really like any of the waifu choices in either game, other than I guess Yukari; not that I hate any of them.
Generally speaking, I'd go P4 > P3. And God I can't wait for P5, I've been participating in this P3 vs P4 argument since what, 2008? I don't care any more, what is there left to still be angry about?
