This is something that isn't explained in the game and I hate it.
The game never tells you there is a tech tree of weapons and that you have to upgrade your basic weapons to access them.
I only crafted weapons and never upgraded them because I thought with the new materials I could forge better lances so upgrading was useless in early game.

Elemental damage can be worth it on all weapons given the right circumstances.
Lance in particular can go either way. You'll benefit from the element, but it's not super necessary. If you have two weapons with the same sharpness and raw and one has an element that the monster is weak to and one has an element that the monster is resistant to, then you use the one with the one the weak element.
If the difference in displayed raw value is under 20 points, it's typically an okay idea to go with the element
Do element weapons do status effects too? Debating if I should make Zamtrios CB.

No. You either have element, or you have status.
Charge Blades are different. Phials are independent of the actual weapon's element. Zamtrios CB in particular is one of the ones that can't knock out or exhaust a monster, but trades that for extreme elemental damage on its charge attacks.

There's some kind of armor combination that gives Handicraft, which basically boosts your sharpness up a tier. I think Gore armor is in that equation somewhere.

Kirin's got a history of being 'hard to track' by the guild, so the Kirin quests will pop up randomly in the guild and the village. There are low and high rank variants, the first one I fought was in MHF2 at roughly the 5* village quests. Wouldn't be surprised if it appeared pretty early here, too.

I don't think tripping in general is as bad as it was.
Most of my attacks with Charge Blade don't get interrupted, it's only Insect Glaive light attacks that seem to which isn't a big deal. I'm not speaking for all weapons, just my mains.

Weapons aren't like armor where they can become obsolete. You can just keep upgrading it, and generally if you can get a better weapon you should.

You have to load phials into your shield.
First, charge phials with R+A (ideally red charge to give you 5)
Then, do X, X+A, X+A, R. This does a normal attack into a shield bash into the axe mode, but R cancels it and loads the phials into your shield.
Now your shield has lance tier guarding in SnS mode and +20% more damage in Axe mode. Your Super Burst becomes the ultra burst but uses up the buff.

A low-ish neg. affinity doesn't really matter if your damage is already really high and sometimes it's better to take a risk and get it over no affinity but less raw.

That's the jist of the game, but there's a shit ton of monsters in the full game, with quite varied movesets between them.
In the end you are just going to be dodging and slashing in a way.

They're literally the worst weapon in the game. Without powercoatings, specific armor sets against specific monsters, critical weapons they're terrible
