I think it's mostly a combination of those things and the fact that Krystal is so fucking bland and empty as a character. The way things are, though, she hasn't acted telepathic at all, otherwise Star Fox and co. wouldn't have any problems ever, herself included. That telepathy is troublesome, and the only real way to work her in would be to strike everything after Adventures from canon, and start anew with her in the Great Fox. She can show up in multiplayer.
