I remember around the time of owning PS2 I had this weird feeling that gameplay was going to take a backseat to narrative.
Once the last of us got fucking 11 out of 10's despite being a 7 out of 10 game I realized that the future is going to be shit and I should buy nintendo consoles and PC platform games so I don't become a completely jaded fuck.

ME2 was the worst ME game. It was completely different in tone from the first game with a lot more emphasis on waifu/husbando crap that I didn't give a damn about. RPG elements became more simplified rather than improved upon. Gameplay went pure Gears of War.
ME3 was a good game. I couldn't care less what people say about the final ten minutes or so. It at least tried to go back to what was established in ME1.

They were a lot different. ME3 had a tone more like ME1. ME3's story focused on reapers (like ME1) while ME2 focused on daddy issues. You could have cut out ME2 and not missed anything of worth from the story since the only thing of worth was the identity of the collectors.

It depends on why you hated it. ME3 is certainly more similar in tone and story to ME1, but the gameplay is still shootery like ME2.
