The closest anyone's ever come to double-jumping are those moments in DDR when you go to hit a jump note but you fucked up and jumped too early.

I don't understand why they give you a jump that's one height, and then make every-single-gap-and-ledge too high, so you have to double jump for everything, making your normal jump useless.

Platformers with shitty physics like smash have things like double jumps that allow you to adjust your jump more afterwards.
Good platformers like Mario just have you jump and some air control, it's all that's needed since the physics are so good and intuitive.

I think it's fine in Metroid Prime, ironically, but then again the amount of control they give you makes it really hard to fuck up.

Not vidya thing, but when I was a kid, I at one point I tried to run like a raptor, (run on my toes), because I believed that my legs would eventually shape to be that way if I ran like that a lot, and thus I would become faster.
In my defense, running on my toes did help me to become the master of raptor tag.

I once tried to get an achievement for 30 kills in a certain amount of time. I decided to go for the smaller, weaker enemies, but even with them, I could only get 26 before the time goal passed, so I killed myself to go back to the last checkpoint and try again
But you can actually walljump. I used to parkour when I was 16don't judgeand jumping from a wall to grab something higher up was something I did everyday. It actually works. Depending on the surface you get more friction and jump higher.

You can use it as a skill jump in 2d platformers.
I made a shitty drawing, but you make a controlled first jump not to hit the spikes overhead then have to make a second controlled jump to avoid falling and hitting the spikes overhead.
It's a more complicated and challenging jump than most others in platformers, but I suppose it's one of those instances as to WHY it can exist in terms of level design.
