Think back to what made shakespear popular, his work(or the work he accumulated from others) was able to entertain all facets of society.
In the modern era films don't attempt that much anymore and the less educated, escapist people aren't entertained by quality shit.
Take Drive backlash, people wanted a fast and furious movie, not a realistic and uncomfortable crime film.
