but I've become quite successful in youtube and streaming over the past couple of years and my advice is pick a niche and control it. You can't really advertize in today's market and there's so many big youtubers and streamers that any game they cover is going to bury you.
Pick certain styles of games or series and just stick with them. Preferably ones that aren't played to hell and back. If you get in early enough when people go looking for that series they'll find you and give you a chance. Once you have a decent base going it'll kind of grow on its own and you can ween your fans/subscribers into other games or genres. Also when you go to network and cross promote if you have some weight behind you people will actually pay attention to you and doors will naturally open.
Kind of like any career or situation really.

You missed the boat. The days of getting into streaming and building up a viewership over time is basically dead now and people expect top tier production values, a face cam and expensive equipment set up on your stream from day 1. Most high tier streamers besides double PC stream setups get to 5k in equipment.
Most still use 100-150 dollar microphones, most even still USB only. I'd say the most expensive aspect that most high end streamers utilize is their internet as they usually use up a ton of data and put out 3500 kbps bitrate for 720p/60fps at high quality. But that's not necessary for a starting stream since most people would complain about lag in your stream.
And even then, a dual PC streaming setup isn't necessary and most of your viewers won't notice. A greenscreen, some lighting, a C920, and an AT2020 is more than enough to get started and that won't put you over 500-600 bucks depending on your space.

I wouldn't say you need high production values to make a stream, but you need to be *very* good at a game. Gone are the days of getting high viewer counts by streaming a random game. Hell, even streaming the most popular AAA title early will only make you famous for a day or two.
The most important thing is to be good at a game that's fun to watch and have viewer interaction (such as a cam). That, and you need dedication as well. I think Witwix said he quit his drop and tried streaming like 12 hours daily for a year before he got a viewershipand he only has 1-3k viewers on his stream.

The MOST EXPENSIVE microphone I've seen was a Heil PR40 and SM7B used by few. But the streamer didn't even buy that because a bunch of us got him it for a Christmas present.
But the average still uses 100-150 dollar USB mics. The only real "production standard" with streams these days is the C920 webcam. Greenscreen depends on the person. Some use them, some don't. But setting up one of those isn't expensive.

I'm in the same boat and I get what you mean about the effort/hobby.
As of late my regular viewers have been asking I stream some newer generation stuff(Wii/PS3/WiiU) but I don't have a capture device and I'm pretty sure my computer is too weak to handle it.
It's important I keep my current loyal viewer base happy but it's a big investment building a new PC and getting the capture card.

Honestly, that's the -hardest- part of streaming for big and small people. Your loyal viewer base.
By all means, you love the people that come in and watch as often as they can and give tons of moral support and keep the chat active. But sometimes they can be really restrictive as to what it is you're streaming. Yes, I know you came to the channel because I played a specific title you like watching, but sometimes the viewer growth well dries up, sometimes interests change, and new games come out.
Some are doomed to stream the same game forever. Some break away from that and learn who their really loyal viewers are but lose tons in the process. It's nerve-racking for me, for sure. I don't even have that big of a viewer base either.

A perfect summation of an actual interesting conversation I had with some of my viewers tonight. Basically me talking about I was amazed at going back and looking at the stats for unique views for me streaming RE4 vs REmaster and that even though I was playing REmaster on it's release I got SO many more view playing RE4 and that my concurrent viewers took a big drop when I switched to LoZ and it didn't climb back up until I was in the middle of the second game.
I'm sure when I jump to the next series I'll have my holdovers who will watch anything but yeah, I don't wanna be playing the same game forever and it seems detrimental.

I dont have a camera, I dont comment when I play and I've made it a rule that I never link my stream anywhere. At most I've had ~40 viewerswhile streaming DmC.
If I drop in my shitty slav accept and get a camera so I can make funny faces I will probably make it to 100-120, but I doubt I can ever get more than that unless I viral my shit, and that would feel bad.
In the end, I tried streaming for fun, to feel good and enjoy the game more. Its counter intuitive to make myself feel bad in order to maybe feel good later.

As long as you don't have tons of ambient noise and your aren't clipping the mic, a 150 dollar XLR dynamic or condenser is going to be plenty for streaming. Which is why everyone uses mics in that range. Hell, like I said most people don't even have an audio interface unless they're doing a dual PC streaming setup (as they need the mixer and interface to send audio from one to the other). USB mics are the grand majority. You're most likely to see Blue Yeti and AT2020 USBs before any other mic.

Slender happened and the rest is history. that faggot was sort of a rival and brought all his shitty normal/vlog channel fans to Let's Plays.
