Thoes flying "?" blocks can be "stunned" and when they are the game trys to run the stun animation but it doesn't exist (because they shouldn't be able to be stunned).
For some reason this causes the game to treat the section of memory which controls on-screen data as if it were executable code. Theoretically, by manipulating on-screen objects, that block of memory can be configured into any string of bits you want.
In other words, by moving specific things on screen, at specific times, in specific places. You can have the game execute any program you wish.
