What's the most pretentious game you've ever played?
>>
Define "pretentious" in a video game context.
>>
>>277291664
Stanley parable

Or bioshock infinite.
>>
>>277291664
Sunset Overdrive and Fez
>>
I give it ten more seconds before Braid or Dear Esther is mentioned.
>>

At least that one is free.

Bioshock Infinite.
>>
>>277291664

Bioshock Infinite or Sotc
>>
>>277291817
SO was pretty self aware that it was retarded though.

Spec Ops The Line.

It was 5 bucks at first

runescape and world of warcraft
>>

last time i checked it was 5 euros
>>
>>277291960

The demo is identical to the "game" except for the end.
>>
>>277291979
That wasn't pretentious. It was awesome.

I haven't played many that could be considered pretentious, so I guess Braid is the the most pretentious that I personally have played.
>>
>>277292171
So much this I can't even.
>>
Gone Home
>>
>>277291832
>Dear Esther

But Dear Esther completely deserves it. It's bad on every level and not even enjoyable to people who like walking simulators.
>>
Thomas was alone
>>
>>277292318
I enjoyed it.
>>
>>277291664

Ico, Stanley Parable, Dear Esther, and Heavy Rain.
>>
>>277292283
To this day I don't get the boner journos had for it.

>But...you unravel the story by exploring and uncovering clues~

No shit. Bioshock did the exact same fucking thing. Point and click adventures do the exact same fucking thing. There's an entire genre dedicated to that.
>>

Why? Everyone knows those are shit.
>>
>>277292435
How is Ico pretentious?
>>
>>277292508

What's pretentious about it, story is very simple?
>>
>>277292473

Because hardly any of them actually play video games and they all jumped aboard the vidya train recently.

Their idea of video games probably is COD and a few pieces of indie garbage a friend showed them.
>>
>>277292412

How? No seriously. The only part I kinda enjoyed was the bit where you go through the bioluminescent cave due to the visuals.
>>
>>277292083
What the devs tried to do with the game is the height of pretentiousness.
>>
how was stanley parable pretentious at all
do you think the hitchhiker's guide was pretentious
>>
>>277291883
I found Planescape surprisingly down to earth when I first played it.

I was expecting the characters to communicate exclusively through shitty half-baked philosophy but then right when you start the game you meet Morte the wacky skeleton who wants to fuck zombie women and once you get outside everybody calls you a berk.
>>
>>277292628
>implying anyone here read anything other than Harry Potter and Songs of Ice and Fire after the show started
>>
Gone Homo
Dear Esther
Amnesia
Machine for pigs
Everything by David Cage
60$ Demo
Bioshock Infinite
Skyrim
Fallout 3
>>
>>277292701
i'd assume they at least did the teenage LOTR and H2G2 thing
>>
>>277292618
It's an extremely good looking game with lots of world building details everywhere. I also enjoyed trying to spot the ghost stalking you. And the narrative kept me curious for more.
>>
>>277292539

Minimalist to the extent it hurt the game.

Expecting me to care about Yorda just because she was there and I was holding her hand.

I liked her but fuck she could have at least spoken to Ico more than 2 times. I don't give a fuck if it was even in a made up language or that Ico wouldn't understand. Just have her babble on and try to help and point things out.

But nope, she's a plank of wood because muh art muh minimalism.
>>
>any game with self referential humour
>>
>>277291664
Dark Souls
>>
everything nintendo

they are always so fucking high and mighty about how they stand alone in gaming and do their own thing

their own thing is bland trash though
>>
>>277292815
>try to help and point things out.

Uhm, she did that all the time when I played the game.
>>
>>277292709
The last two aren't pretentious.

Gone Home appeals to people who want an "experience," not a "game."
>>
>>277292709
>last two
"Bad" and "pretentious" are pretty different things you know.

I liked FO3 fuck you
>>
>>277293024
skyrim most definitely was lol.
>>
>>277293074
If they want the experience of walking around in an empty house why even play a game then?
>>
>>277293135

No it wasn't. Game never tries to be patrician, intelligent, philosophical, make you think or anything. It's a simple dungeon crawler.
>>
>>277293135
How was skyrim pretentious? It was barbarians beating the shit out of dragons in recycled dungeons.

It was AAA trash, sure, but at no point was it ever shooting to be 2deep4u

while i very much enjoyed spec ops the line, i could understand if someone says it's pretentious
>>
>>277293201
>>277293257

advertising was pretentious as fuck, 11/11/11 release date, commercials. Trailers, they tried to make it out to be gods gift to gaming.
>>
>>277293548
that was like 12 years ago dude, nobody cares anymore
>>
>>277293548
Most games do that
>>
>>277291930

I think the proper term for SO is "trying too hard"

or

"linkin park"
>>
>>277293548

That's just good advertising.
