>>277260854
I share your opinion about their greatness (although on release 2142 was pretty rough if I recall, but dat titan mode mang) but what do you mean languish in obscurity? 1942 was super popular in its day and even after Vietnam came out.
It's just an old game now, although it doesn't really play like its super dated, its just a slower version of the current ones. I personally still prefer 1942's playstyle but I don't think I'd call it obscure, unless you're just saying that the franchise picked up all the dudebro gamers after 2, in which case you're probably right.

Rage of Mages series was a good series of rpg games, later succeeded by a fully 3d game Evil Islands: Curse of the Lost Soul, with a complex stealth, hunting and crafting system. If you ever played a Rage of Mages game, you'll understand most of the gameplay mechanics in this one.

Be sure to not play Descent 3, it's shit in comparison. Descent 1 is indeed the best way to get into it.
Also as someone else mentioned, it's 6 DOF, so prepare to be overwhelmed by the controls. Disable auto-levelling right away, it does nothing to help you. If you value your sanity, keep your craft "upright" as much as you can.
I played it on a 3D joystick back then, keyboard is possible, but a bit of a fallback, with too many keys and not enough fingers. A gamepad might actually work. At least it has a sufficient number of axes.
>>277270496
Love that game fuck the haters. Dat music.
>>277264953
It's not bad, but some people can't get over the concept of not being in control of the camera, like in every modern third person game. The complaints about the "tank control" and the camera have both the same origin, you only had a single directional control on the PS1, so controlling character AND camera was not an option.
>>277271063
this looks like Divinity 2, I wonder why its not on GoG or Steam

all games you linked are shareware titles with tracker music. Tracker music is superior even today, in part for interactivity (check Deus Ex and its rather smooth ambient music transitions for stealth vs. combat). People want their ogg music though, so devs are giving them ogg music, no matter how shit it is.

>>277272754
DOF is Degrees of Freedom. It refers to the 3D motions you can perform in a game.
For example Doom is a 3DOF game. You can move in two directions (forward/backward and strafe) and rotate along one axis (yaw).
Most modern FPS are 4DOF games, the additional degree of freedom is tilting the head up down (pitch), and sometimes a very limited 5th degree in the form of jumping (you don't control movement along this axis, you just give one impulse)
Descent has 6DOF, which means you can move (strafe) along every 3D axis (up/down, forward/backwards, left/right) as well as rotate along every axis (pitch, yaw, roll). You do not stay in contact with the ground (or walls, or ceiling), so full freedom of movement is maintained.
As such "FPS style" playing does not work. You do need roll control in the game, a lot, and occasionally you do need vertical strafing. The game was quite a mess on the keyboard. Sure, WASD are straightforward, but then you got to add QE for rolling, and where you do place vertical strafing? If you put it on WS, you need forward motion control. The game offers a thrust setting, so you can move at a constant speed without pressing anything, but that's gonna backfire when you're under attack. So, yeah, mapping Descent's controls is not trivial. There is no established scheme.
How about some motherfucking Stunts?
>>277273291
>Most modern FPS are 4DOF games
That's not entirely true, actually. Head tilting is limited to a 180° arc and the axes don't add up. In Descent there is no such limit. You can do a full backflip with ease, or half a backflip and then continue to move forward while upside down. It's VERY different from a normal FPS, due to the excessive freedom.
Simple example: You look forward, upright. Perform a quarter circle pitch up, then a quarter circle yaw to the right. You're now looking at what used to be to your right, but the ceiling is to your left now. If you don't maintain full awareness of all your movements, you WILL get lost.
In the single player levels the game actually "helps" you a little, by putting all round lights on the ceiling and all edge lights on walls. So you can always get back into an upright position if you look at your environment. The multiplayer levels though are deliberately crazy, with lights on all walls/floors/ceilings.

It was a puzzle game with bullshit puzzles. There was a period in gaming, shortly after the introduction of the CD-ROM, where devs thought they could fool people with "multimedia", which meant nothing but a shitload of useless FMV. In between all that FMV junk you'd find puzzles that have nothing to do with the game, or anything else, for that matter. Half the puzzle was figuring out wtf the devs were smoking when they made them. You're better off not having "played" them.
