Trips used to be pretty fun in the day, it wasn't as heavy scorned until around 2010 - 2012 or so and it created some nice OC at times. If you wanted to stand out among the legions at all you had to provide shit to go along with it, carve a niche, or just go die.
These days even if it came with OC or was being used for the right reasons it would be told to go fucking die though, in some ways it's a bit much in one direction.
There were some fun moments to go along with it; tripfags still caught shit, especially if they were shitty. There was one week when everyone pretended to be a knockoff of Anime_Expert_(Has seen 407+ animes completely, last watched: cocks) that created a bit of humor. Everyone was something like Dick_Expert_(Has sucked 214+ dicks completely) to fuck with the guy.
Eh, it wouldn't really make sense by today's standards. Just back then nothing was really serious business at all, the posting quality was less at times but it was more fun.

I wouldn't call 4chan pre-2008 friendlier by a wide margin. If anything, post-2011 4chan is too much of a damn hugbox to be fun or enjoyable anymore. It's also way too large for it's own good. You rarely have massive shitstorms anymore since everything of significance has it's own general.
Nothing funny is made anymore since everyone is content to just coast on popular memes and not make something for themselves. It's gotten considerably more constructive in certain respects. Drawthreads weren't a regular thing until three years ago. It's a hell of a lot easier to find what your looking for and as long as it isn't anime recommendations on /a/, you can get away with a lot of shit here that wouldn't fly even five years ago. But that kills spontaneity so much that nothing good ever gains critical mass anymore. There's no fucking reason to ever see something you disagree with because instead of a downvote, you have a filter where you can block anything you even remotely dislike. You don't have to look at the other topics that people are posting and the general flow of the conversation because you have a catalog now. Hell, you can forget that any board that you don't browse exists with the official extension. For a place that prides it self on hating reddit, tumblr, and the like for having a narrow viewpoint, we've pigeonholed ourselves into a neat little box of relatively awkward outcasts with a slightly eclectic taste with a subculture that refuses to try something new.
Sadly, I've been stuck on this shithole for eight years, and even after all the shit that has gone down that would make a rational person quit this site out of dissapointment and rage, I'll probably be complaining about this eight years from now, contributing to problem with my inability and inaction.
