Obscure vidya thread. You can post in this thread but first you must mention an obscure video game that you've played. Or not. Just talk about obscure video games.

Does that (and the prequel) work natively under Win7?

I never played the original Rebel Moon but Rising works pretty damn good in XP. Don't know about Win7 sadly, sorry. I would imagine it wouldn't give too much trouble as it wasn't a very demanding game in terms of hardware.

Came about because of the split between Firaxis and Activision with both contesting that they owned the right to the Civ name. This game got largely maligned and ignored compared to Civ 3 (by FAR the worst civ game ever made imho.) Might not be particularly obscure but never seen it mentioned on here.

Had some interesting ideas though. The tech went up as far as having underwater cities and cities in orbit. You could have slaver units that could capture other civs population if they were working on that tile. Had a certain lack of polish and style but was better than civ 3 and was good fun until civ 4 came along.

I'm just so fucking bad at adventure games, I can't do it. It took me half an hour to find out I had to click the lightswitch, simply because I didn't even realize it was supposed to be dark.
Guess it's time to just write an autohotkey script that clicks every few pixels on the screen.

>>275998575
It's part of a major franchise, surely it's not that obscure. At the very least, I have a physical cd of it and I played it a lot when I was younger.

Yep you're on the right track, though it technically was the full game on the demo.

Lighthouse: The Dark Being is one of my favorites along with the original Myst. It's just so spooky and ambient despite the fact it's not a horror game. Music was based too for what it was; a quality Sierra game imo. Too bad it's a bitch to run in modern systems.

It's pretty obscure too as not too many people have heard of it.

This used to be an unknown game somewhat but as of late, more people are aware of it's existence due to Retsuprae. I bought this game during the RE survival horror crazy during the PSX days. For some reason it resonated with me and I even like the PS2 sequel. Honestly prefer the sequel to the first one though.

I agree I think it would totally work with a Gears of War type perspective/control. You're only one guy after all and for the most part of the game you have to play extremely smart. Can't just run and gun forever.

Harvester. I think it's one of the funniest adventure games I have ever played. It's one of those adventure games that let you do wrong decisions and make you regret them, so game doesn't necessarily go game over.
It also has multiple endings, spooky atmosphere, amazing soundtrack, and full motion videos.

Another similar game is Deadly Premonition.

Fun fact: The guy who played the main character in Harvester was arrested for cheese pizza, and in his mug shot he's wearing the same shirt he was wearing in Harvester.
It gets even more funnier because there's a running joke in the game that tells Steve (the main character) that "You always were a Kidder Steve" because he apparently likes to prank on people.

Yeah I saw that same thread, what the fuck? Sure it has about the same learning curve or even steeper, doesn't make it Dwarf Fortress.

It's closer to games like Distant Worlds: Universe. Grand strategy game with tons of micro-management if you wish to micro-manage.
>>

No it's not. There's a Yogscast server, a Reddit server, etc. Maybe 5 years ago or so when it was still mainly BYOND exclusive.

Right? I can't figure out why it isn't more popular. It's amazing.
>>
>>276000323

SS13 is especially laggy because people are trying to run a game that simulates an actual environment, a wiring/power system that the code is constantly checking to see if power can be transmitted/wire is not broken. This on a weird variety of C# I think or C++.

Dream Maker just isn't a powerful engine at all. Make any kind of game and it'll run like shit.

>>276000434
By environment I mean atmosphere. So there's actual air that your character has to breathe, invisible of course but still there. Each fucking tile in the game is calculating the gases in it, how warm/cold the air is, if there are airborn pathogens in the air.. that kills the "FPS" if you can even call it that. More like performance.
>>
>>275999710

Actually playing through it right now. Just finished Vagrant Story and I wanted something that felt similar.

The engine is shit. It's a game that runs on an engine made of straws and bubble gum.

I'm not sure how obscure it actually is, but I've never seen /v/ mention it. I found this with my n64 games recently and never even knew I owned it. I guess my dad had it. I think I'll hook up the n64 again and try it out, because according to Wikipedia it's basically GTA before GTA was a thing, and it was made by rockstar before they were called rockstar. GTA did end up coming out before it because the game was delayed, but body harvest was the first 3D one at least.

Flight of the Amazon Queen. I can't believe it's not LucasArts!
But no seriously, this game tries really hard to achieve the atmosphere and feeling of LucasArts adventure games, and it partially succeeds at it. The voice acting and graphics are really nice, but some of the puzzles are way too frustrating and misleading.
