I recommend playing the rest of SHills without the 'character analysis' angle in mind.
It was about many things, but first and foremost about Angels vs Humans war.
Agendas of various persons and corporations, character development and interaction, weird 'unexplainable' events, finally the psychoanalysis angle and everything else are just parts of a very simple premise.
The way the plot is made if presented is what makes Eva what it is, but on the basic level it's just a mecha anime with a deconstruction twist. It's up to viewer to choose which part to focus on the most, but yeah. It's not any more of a focus than any of the other things

Why is 99% of anime flooded with lighthearted and simple stories then? It's not as if there's a 50/50 divide between serious and nonserious. It's all fluff. Where is anime like the The Wire? The Sopranos? Rome? Where is, you know, some show that will stimulate the parts of my brain that grew after I turned 16? I'm not opposed to shounen or harem or moe or slice of life, I just don't get why that's all anime ever has to be.

Same reason adults go watch something like Guardians of the Galaxy, or watch some slice of life anime, it's just good fun. Life can be so draining sometimes, and a nice break from that is always good for me.

Seeing how Spears move and act on their own, I'm GUESSING this is some kind of a harness. To bring them in, but keep them in check.
