AMD is a feeble company, they have barely innovated shit since Intel started kicking their ass with their ix cpus.
Same thing for GPUs, they just release stronger versions of the same fucking die without any real technological innovation.
And before you say MANTLE, right now it's just a buggy piece of shit with the same kind of support early DX11 games had with DX11.

They've had hot cards and inferior drivers, which is an established fact by the way, for a long time.
Nvidia recently got their cards running really cool with the 900 series.
It looks like their trying to fix the driver issues/memes with the latest Omega drivers, which fix hundreds of bugs and add a lot of new features.
It'll be interesting to see what they do with their new cards, and how Nvidia will respond.
>>
>>275533082

270x is the best mid range card you can buy for the cost, and the 290x is a better deal than the 970.

Before the price slashing panic, Nvidia was the pinnacle of price/performance with their 970. After AMD readjusted their prices, their R9 290x got more in line with the competition. The damage is done though, most people still want the brand new 970 over AMD's year old cards.

AMD had a very a skilled GPU team in a city where AMD was the only company to offer jobs to these GPU designers. Apple came along and put a facility right next to AMD and bought out the entire engineering team off AMD by offering ridiculous salaries and benefits to them. I've rigged up a spare case fan to cool vrm 1 (seriously Nvidia - put fucking sensors on your vrms) and i'm aiming for 1200 core.

I doubt I will reach it but I know 1175 is stable with a minor voltage bump from the pic. Still, pushing my card this hard is like pushing a 970 to 1700mhz. It is still a pretty monstrous overclock on air and will surpass a stock 980 (with it boosting) in a lot of games.

That said there is no doubt the 980 is the faster card overall, but it costs more than I paid for my 290x 6 months ago - let alone 290x prices now.

Oh and before /v/ shitposts remember - i'm running this thing with with over a 15% overclock (compared to stock).

Firepros are going for stupidly low money right now (well, low for the professional market) and with Apple onside it is helping AMD eat away at Nvidia's market share.

I'm a different anon to the one that made that claim.

I honestly doubt AMD is going to let Apple yoink their talent when there is a serious push (especially on the cpu side of the business) to get ahead (or at least equal) the competition. It is why AMD is trying to leverage freesync (with samsung onboard we might see it become popular) and Mantle (which has a faster adoption rate than DX11 did).

Personally I don't see freesync or gsync really exploding, but Mantle is a game changer - even if it forces MS to unfuck DX.

Do they? The fact they discontinued the AM3 socket and FX line of CPUs, and their APUs don't ship as anything above quad-core doesn't fit that strategy.
Their GPU department does, however.

They had the server market on their hands back in the Opteron (k8) era. I remember their market share was pretty considerable for a "small" company compared to Intel and IMB.

Their APU setups are really amazing for what they are. Sure they don't beat intel on the cpu side but as a complete package (which means you have to consider the GPU) AMD APUs are years ahead of Intel.

Mostly because Intel cannot into GPUs. With AMD pushing HBM before anyone else (they have a history of being the first on new memory types) we could see their APU's getting a huge boost in performance soon.

Honestly for mustard this is all meaningless - but given a shitload of people play on toasters and laptops it would be a very handy way of undercutting both Intel and Nvidia in the mobile space.

>>275538759

Well, if they leverage GCN's strengths they will (Ryse does - which is why a 290x will beat a 980).

DX12 was announced shortly after AMD made their Mantle plans public, and they had nothing to show aside from the concept and expected improvements.
They still haven't, for that matter, yet Mantle is already a thing with games out there supporting it.

Microsoft hadn't yet started designing DX12 beyond scribbles in a whiteboard when AMD surprised everyone with Mantle.
So, fair enough, AMD did not start it, but they sure had the initiative and made the market rush things forcing Microsoft hands to announce DX12 before they even had anything to show.

The good ones are monsters worthy of legend.

The not so good ones will run at stock and little more. While money is always an object I tend to suggest cos tri-x minimum or go home. Though the PCS+ seems to get mixed reviews (either amazing praise or scathing hatred) - can't deny its ability to cool with a heatsink that is a slot thick.

Mantle is practically a copy/paste of the Xbone's API implementation.

The hard part for Microsoft is going to be getting Intel and nVidia onboard without them blowing a fucking gasket.

Getting devs on board is going to be another battle. DX10 barely gained traction. DX11 is rotting for the most part. Getting dev houses to code to particular cards is a step backwards in terms of development.

Intel, AMD and Nvidia are all caught in a loop where they're holding each other's dicks and refusing to go, and it's causing the CPU/GPU market to stagnate.

Except in mobile/tablet shit, I guess. But desktop PC is moving at a fucking crawl nowadays; what happened to all those technology gurus who talked about how tech would advance so fast each year that our CPU and GPUs would become twice as powerful up into infinity?

They're not. Often they tend to provide better value and now even though they're behind a gen a 290X tends to be better at 4K than a GTX 980.

Their issue now is that they need to get their new cards out since the 970 is very good value while also being cool and OCing well.

A lot of mustards are bitter about DX10 when it was sold as the second coming of GRFX and all we got are pretty waterfalls in Call of Juarez. Pile on with the fact that you needed new hardware and Vista to use it.

I turned enhanced godrays of, and i just can't run the game stable at 60. This seems to be a problem with AMD GPUs becuase ubisoft sucked Nvidias dick. Not even a 980 runs it at locked 60 - only an average if 60.

I primarily use only 2 monitors at any given time and the second gpu only ever gets turned on if I plan on playing racing sims or jerking off while running benchmarks.

I find overclocking a single 970 and monitoring its voltage works out better than just booting up two fireballs in my case.

Surprisingly the 970 oc'ed out performs multiple crossfire/sli setups I have tested.

Also OBS refuses to work on a shit ton of games when sli.

okay coming from somebody who has owned various cards from both manufactures there really isnt a huge difference in quality that isnt time dependent. at certain times AMD has beat out nVidia and vice versa, its a changing market but you still are going to get a good card from either one, nVidia is generally more expensive but more forgiving if you dont cool it right and AMD cards have a wider selection and lower pricing but you need to know how to cool the damn thing
