We're all fucked now, /v/

as if the NSA wasn't doing that shit already

anyway, video games

Is it a coincidence that Moot killed /pol/ around this time?

Every time this sort of thing comes up and tells me to contact my Senator, I am reminded that I live in California and that Boxer and/or Feinstein supports it or wrote the damn thing.

Yep. I'm surprised, it got through without anyone on the internet noticing until afterward. Just one rep caught it, not that it helped. And remarkably little reporting on it.

Granted it's just retroactive immunity stuff for the administration, I'm guessing they've got to set things up to make any future attempts at prosecution fail before they even have a chance to get off the ground.

It is for your own good. It is to stop terrorists.

How do I keep up to date on stupid shit Congress is doing? I want to stop being clueless

This is why. moot is a traitor in this critical time.

It's been a while, what was SOPA trying to do again?

Is this the same as PIPA and all the other clone bills?

This changes literally nothing because they've been doing this exact fucking thing for years now.

Why can't you people just accept the fact that there's No Way to Stop It?

Instead of focusing people's attention to this issue /v/ spend time arguing with feminists over game "journalism"
>>
It's so cute how all the little politicians create these bills like ACTA, SOPA, PIPA, etc. and they're just watered down versions of whichever the first one happened to be, and then when one of them finally passes, they push and push until they had exactly what they wanted from the very beginning.

If your bill does not pass, you should not be allowed to present it again for some time. And you should not be able to simply take the contents of the bill and call it something else.
>>
Congress does shady shit like this all the time. They also just gutted the wall street reform too. Nothing is going to change until lobbying is made illegal which will never happen
>>
>>275456310

Reddit can actually be good with keeping you up to date on recent happenings, thought they aren't any good at analysis or even accuracy.

EFF and ACLU are good sources to see what they're worried about, other than that I'd suggest just keeping an eye on whatever journalists who've written worthwhile articles on the subject.

As an aside, I suspect the timing of the torture report information isn't a coincidence.
>>
>>275456942
Drop that corpse, it'll only stink you up further. You don't need to parade about yelling "IT'S DEAD, GUYS"
>>
Let me see if I understand this correctly:

Rather than create legislation about giving them increased surveillance powers, they hid this shit in the yearly vital budget bills that always pass, knowing no one would read it?

They did the same thing with the NDAA two years ago.
>>
>>275456310

The Intercept is Greenwald's current home. And anything from Lauren Poitras can be expected to be worthwhile.

You're still subject to their surveillance. Not even the rich in your country are safe from it. Not even the rich in America are safe from it. Ever read 1984? The party leaders were spied on more than the average citizen.

That's still a thing? Last time I checked, the entire site was filled with CP.

Not necessarily. Based Putin is setting up alternate systems with China. Hence the proxy war in Ukraine, Syria, and the drop in oil prices as an attack on Russia.

>>275457936
It'll most likely crash when people adopt another currency for universal trade, so that's kind of a moot point

That's what gets me, for a lot of them it's just something to do or to be a part of. I've even seen some of them post they're afraid of it ending and not having anything to fill the void again.
>>
>>275457913
Was early /pol/ better?

I had just assumed it was /new/ 2.0 from the beginning
>>
>>275457592

We can't just hop to the next country. I've met more than one European who has a hard time grasping the distances involved in the US. Besides that, most people anywhere don't care about these things as long as they have food on the table and they don't have to worry much about crime.
>>
There is literally nothing wrong with this. Harassment of women is very big right now, the online world is not a safe space for women.

This will help that
>>
>>275458103
No it won't. The corporate media won't even report it.
>>
>>275458029

Last time I checked you had no idea what CP means according to the law
>>
I'm not really sure the government is so obsessed with monitoring and logging all internet communication.
Can you imagine the sheer amount of irrelevant shit that they end up logging? It seems like it would be such a large amount of information that it would be impossible to actually do anything useful with.
>>
>That type of collection is currently allowed under an executive order that dates back to former President Reagan

You didn't read the article, this has already been happening for decades.

Fair warning, Greenwald is a drama queen. It may get on one's nerves how aggressive he is.

I love reading his stuff, but I can't stand listening to him speak. It's not the content of his words but the tone he takes.

I had difficulty listening to this:

>>
>>275458186
It's for blackmailing certain people. Not for the sake of monitoring the average pleb.
>>
>>275458186
They log it all because they can. They have constructed massive datacenters in the middle of nowhere in places like Utah to store it all.

They run the metadata through search parameters to build patterns and determine trends. When it comes to surveilling the public, this is more valuable than reading the contents of messages themselves.

They only actually look inside the emails and such when it's someone important, such as a politician, judge, or activist. This gives them control.

The people voting to expand the power of the NSA are the NSA's main victims, and that's why they vote to expand their power. They have them by the balls and offer them rewards if they just suck it and up and go along with it.
>>
>>275458238

No. It's becoming easier and easier to sit on your ass and do nothing. Sure you'll go out and riot for a few days but after no more than a week you're going to be craving beer and a movie. Some people won't even get up from their beer and movie.

Protest and shit was fine and dandy when you didn't have something else better to do. Now you can have porn, pizza, and vidya all from one chair and a couple clicks.
