Well you see Anon, Golden Sun has no future and is really niche.
There is no point in making a niche character playable if it will only make a few people excited. This is Smash I am talking about, not Playstation All Stars. Keeping audiences interested and hyped keeps Smash alive. If I introduced "literal who's" too often the game's hype will take a hit. And before you argue about Shulk and Corrin, well their games are recent or coming out soon and they provide an interesting and fun moveset in contrast to Isaac, Corrin is a Fire Emblem character and that series is really becoming more popular as of late. If I added Isaac it becomes, "Why isn't Ray in Smash?", "Why isn't Saki in Smash?", "Why isn't Pious Augustus in Smash?", "Why isn't Sami in Smash?", "Why isn't Doshin in Smash?", and it just keeps on coming. Bayonetta has been highly requested during the duration of the ballot. Our test audiences concurred that she would have this diverse and interesting moveset. It was no problem to get her on board considering we have made deals with SEGA before and we luckily managed to avert a CERO crisis. Because of her relevancy among Nintendo audiences, high demand and how fun she would be, the team decided to include her in the game. She's what I would call a "modern icon" and I see a bright future ahead of her. I hope you enjoy Corrin and Bayonetta as the last DLC characters

It's not even that, really. Your typical /v/ user now was a little kid during the GBA era and Golden Sun was their first experience with JRPGs, so they didn't know any better. The love of the series is entirely due to nostalgia, so when they played Dark Dawn after playing other JRPGs, it comes off as a let down because they never went back to the original games to realize how awful they truly are.

Ok, so skipping over a lot of the plot details..
throughout the first game Felix (who was a childhood friend of Isaac) was presumed taken hostage by the bad guys. After defeating the two big bads, he surprises everyone by saying he's going to continue doing what they started and runs off.
In the second game, you play as Felix and it turns out Isaac and his team were being misled the entire time and Felix was actually doing the right thing the whole time. Also throughout the whole game Isaac is hunting you down until he almost gets killed and you come to his rescue.
Also, even though both are mostly silent protagonists, Felix has ever so slightly more personality to him.

It's really sad to see so much hate for GS in these threads.
I dunno if that's just a /v/ thing, but every person I've spoken to in real life that played it greatly enjoyed them.
The game mechanics were simple to learn, and fun to master. The music was phenomenal for its platform, and the graphics were revolutionary. In this respect, it's a lot like Ocarina of Time (another highly-rated game, and justly so).
Personally I wanted Isaac//Felix in more for their moveset than just to have a GS rep. The tiny bits we see in Project M's Isaac character really helps bring out what could have been: a ranged grab, the "Move" attack, and other mixes of swords and sorcery that the series embodied.
I'm not upset that Bayonetta and Corrin won. They'll both be unique and interesting characters, and I hope to enjoy them both. I'm just glad there was even the chance.

Well, for one, he actually has something resembling a personality and character development, being presented as part of the antagonist faction(and as such, not being a silent protagonist for the first part of the story). At first he's a bit arrogant but later encounters serve to humanize him and make him more sympathetic and even heroic at times(culminating with him leaping off a skyscraper to rescue a girl at the end of the first Golden Sun), so when the perspective switches to him for the second game and he's just your regular old no-gray-area hero it's not terribly jarring.
Gameplay-wise they're pretty much identical besides Felix being a little stronger(the physically strongest party member, in fact), hardier and slower(but still around average speed).

Felix definitely had that "anti-hero" look and vibe to him in the first GS game. Then when you control him he loses all personality and dialogue. Isaac starts as the silent protagonist and in Lost Age he's just a generic leader-type guy. LameI still like Isaac more and gave him the Sol Blade in the end.

Felix only had personality in Isaac's game. Isaac only had personality in Felix's game. I'd still say Felix had more overall, since he was a bigger part and had more lines and actual agency in the first game. All Isaac does in Game 2 is show up, join you and become one of your generic party members.
Also Felix is the overall protagonist of the entire story.

I loved going all the way back to Vale in the first game, and being able to travel the entire world. Sure, it took some time to walk everywhere, but it was nice to revisit those beginnings.That and the FUCKING cliffhanger ending with zero inclination of a continuation, or explanation of the goddamn thing you were sent on a quest because of anyhow

Golden Sun's strange swapping of silent characters is a lot like Shining Force III's, which was Camelot's last game for Sega. SFIII was even weirder, since the scenario's stories overlapped with each other. 2 of the games contain the same scene from 2 different perspectives, with Synbios being the silent protagonist in Scenario 1 while Medion is the silent protagonist in Scenario 2.

There's a difference between consequences and the points of no return. A big part of the first two games was being able to explore all the areas you had been to before and finding new things after getting new abilities. Slapping the points of no return in makes the game extremely linear.
I wouldn't mind if there were consequences due to actions you had done in the game, but being punished for playing through it is kinda bullshit.

It's a good game with fairly generic, yet still decently explored characters that ramps up greatly in its latter half, almost to the point where you wonder why they didn't just get shit going earlier so as to make mechonis and everything that follows longer. The combat is a bit too simple and MMO-esque for my taste, but it never truly detracted from the experience.
