Sup /v/, I'm in the mood for a roguelike. Got 10 bucks on steam to spare and currently browsing.
Got my eyes on The Dungeoning and Rogue's Tale. Anyone played it?
Otherwise give me your recommendations. I'm not pro or anything at those games, but I enjoyed things like SotS: The Pit and Doom RL.

paying for a roguelike? are you stupid?

The best roguelikes are free, most are open source at that. Play something like NetHack, ADOM, ToME (I prefer the 2.3.5 version that still had Middle-Earth setting), UnReal World or something.

ADOM and Angband are my favorites (ADOM especially).

Why, I am playing one as we speak, anon!

You don't need to pay for roguelikes. The best ones are for free and have titles.

Try these:
Angband (you don't have to win and it has an easy early game to enjoy yourself)
Unnethack
Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup
AliensRL
BerserkRL
>>
Cataclysm DDA and Dorf Fort Adventure mode. Is OP's pic a UI for some other roguelike or is it its own thing?
>>
>>272901625

IVAN is the best roguelike there is or ever will be. Period. Too hard for most plebs though, and doesn't have as much content like more accessible roguelikes like Crawl.

Tales of Maj'Eyal (available on steam, but also free on the devs website) is arguably one of the best, if not the best, roguelikes out there. It is also probably the cheapest roguelike. It's only a few bucks. Considering that it has around 50 hours of game content just for one play through I'd say that you aren't going to get a better deal as far as roguelikes go.
>>
>>272901983
How rare is it to find fans of true roguelikes on /v/ in general.

Angband is great - large, expansive dungeons, interesting bosses, kind of a "play at your own pace" feel (but certainly not grindy).

>>272902527
True, but the amount of different dungeons you can tackle at a given time still gives you more choice and variation than pretty much every other roguelike. Most of them don't even have branching dungeons, let alone more than just the one dungeon you keep exploring deeper and deeper.

TOME does have some nice dungeon variety that I haven't seen before like the sandworm dungeon where you have to follow the giant sandworms who make the tunnels and try to keep up with them before the tunnels cave in behind you.

Never made it out of the Halls of Mandos. But if I ever did I would be pimped out for the real game.
>>
>>272902360
It was enjoyable the first time (I beat it on my second character) but with too much deterministic "content" and too little emergent gameplay, I'm not too keen on doing it again. Plus, it has a number of annoyances like an UI that's somewhere in between WoW and typical roguelikes but not as good as either.
>>
>>272902948

IVAN is fun but complete bullshit, the only reason you don't get frustrated at the hideous levels of bullshit being thrown at you is because they're usually incredibly amusing.

Nothing wrong with that. I really like TOME for the character customization that it offers and I really like the dungeons, but it's not the only roguelike I'll subscribe to for the rest of my life. I like to play more randomized roguelikes as well. I think TOME is a good babbys first roguelike, though, without being super easy.

My only ascension went like this. Once I got reasonable resistances and was max stated (which I got by normally descending in the dungeon) I pretty much dived from DL 65 to DL99.

The Morgoth bossfight is unlike everything I have ever encountered as well.

I see Angband mentioned, if you guys like that game get Sil. It's pretty cool and has a nice skill system.

IVAN is fucking hilarious, beating that one was a lot of fun. The last dungeon is such a madhouse

DC:SS is cool but the latest updates have kind of changed the game radically

Cataclysm DDA is a game with a lot of content but no goal other than survival and not enough challenge. There isn't anything to do in the endgame besides steamroll everything with a super strong character.

DoomRL is RIP AND TEAR and feels very similar to playing a normal Doom game. The perks are awesome and it's definitely worth a play

Haven't played TOME much but it has a really cool class system and lots of fun gear.

Same as most RL really, just reach the last floor and escape.
And yes, in Brogue there's no xp or rewards for killing monsters. There's no xp at all, actually. You only get stronger by drinking certain potions or upgrading your equipment. So yeah, while exploration is important, killing monsters is not, and you could pretty much sneak past every one of them.
