In the latest issue of Famitsu, Masahiro Sakurai speaks up about various returning veterans in Smash Brothers such as R.O.B., Falco, and Dr. Mario. Perhaps most interesting of all, and perhaps surprisingly sentimental, is his explanation of the controversial depiction of the King of Evil himself, Ganondorf:
"Ah, yes. I've gotten many complaints about Ganondorf. Why doesn't he use his sword more? Why isn't he as powerful as he is in Zelda? Well, when I decided to add him in Super Smash Brothers, of course he was a late addition included only because his physical appearance was easy enough to model swap over Captain Falcon. So I couldn't do as much justice as I wanted with him, but I worried people would be upset if I left out such an important and striking character.
Ganondorf is somewhat of a contradiction---in Smash Brothers, he's both powerful, yet sometimes comes across as a little worn down, a little tired. In a way, he was greatly influenced by my late father who passed away shortly beforehand. As a child, I viewed my father as a strict-disciplinarian, a man I both feared and respected. But when I grew up, I realized my father, that man I was saw as a powerful figure---a king---was often out of breath, and limped along. I wondered why I feared him so much? And in a way, that's how I've developed Ganondorf as a character. Personally I'm quite close to the character, and thus I find it difficult to bring myself to change him too much."

His story missions are my favorite to play, Zant always talks big but in every attempt finds himself in trouble and begs for help. Ghirahim doing his own thing and capturing keeps in the name of Ganondorf. Truly playing the villain with a crew was a joy.

Shit like a ground slam and an energy ball are far less iconic and interesting than spinning a trident around to summon bats with dark magic, summoning people into another world by hitting them with lightning, teleporting around menacingly, and all of the shit that can be done with a trident as a primary weapon.
Think about it; Smash currently has 0 polearm users in the entire game. Bowser Jr's already been wasted to the Clown Car, so Ganon's really the only person who can some in repping something resembling a spear.

Sakurai is a herofag. He pays no respect to franchises memorable villains, after all most games are only so great because of the villain they set you up against. Besides, Sakurai already throws in characters for the sake of having reps. Look at Dr. Mario, Lucina, Dark Pit, Pichu, Roy, and Bowser Jr.
Ganondorf never really uses a sword in the zelda games, he fights by swinging his arms around in oot. Makes sense to keep him as a brawler. Sucks, but makes sense.

Ridley created a lot of waves through out the years, and people actually know of him because of the Other: M infamous PTSD scene.
King K. Rool of course, he hasn't been seen often but he was Donkey Kong's villain for almost 10 years.
Any of Zelda's 2nd tier villains, Ghirahim for instance was really popular and has an incredible original style but he's not worth a slot apparently.
3rd party villains, Wily and Robotnik are extremely iconic themselves, goes without saying.
Fire Emblem villains or anti heroes, Black knight for example.
Mewtwo was a great villain in melee, and one of the villain trio in the final event battle
King Hippo or Sandman would be a cool heavy weight boxer to rival Little mac.
Wolf's the best choice for Star fox but he's gone now.
