The story of it is really good and I enjoyed the combat. I played with jap voices actors so i cant comment on voice acting. If you want to have fun with the game, dont do the sidequests, they exist only to help you if your too low level to beat a boss. Gem crafting is worthless in the beginning but is essential for endgame.

his side B is a pretty strange and unique move. The animation lets it hop projectiles, the blade lasts for a very long time, it has two sweet spots, two sour spots and gets a backstab damage bonus.
His up B has the second jump, which is both really unique and kind of borring. His counter has its own properties but who cares. What makes these moves intresting is the way they interact with the monado.
You are hella wrong on your judgment of the monado. There is no one best art, its all very subjective. weather you are wracking up damage, going for kills or trying to survive you always have to choose between better numbers and better movement options. You also have cooldowns on the arts, so you pretty much have to juggle at least two of them. I do think that they will prove to be pretty game breaking... we already know that the monado buff's activation can cancel areial lag, and there is pretty much nothing in the game like jump monado, its crazy fun.
Shulk is borring as a character but a great smasher. Little Mac was billed as risk/reward, and Shulk is the one who delivers it.

Animal Crossing has like 4 or 5 games and is pretty much a permanent fixture in Nintendo's lineup, Wii Fit Trainer pretty perfectly represents an entire era of Wii casual gaming in a hilarious way, and Rosalina and Jr. have each individually appeared in like 7 or more games each and played pretty big roles in a few each, and have also existed for about 3 times as long as Shulk has.

Actually, it's very bad. The entire gameplay is based around multiple people having inputs -- it's clearly designed to have multiplayer. In order to get decent combos out, you need to chain certain types of attacks together. Instead, because you rely on the AI, it's basically random chance whether the AI will throw out the move necessary to deal damage in the fight. It's like a WoW raid where all your teammates use skills at random instead of coordinating them. There is no opportunity for skill in this game, other than the timing-based minigames, which essentially puts it on the same level as 10 seconds in Warioware.
It's a nice time sink, with a slice of anime on the side, but it's bad as a game.

Gems are FAR from worthless to craft... You just have to put some time into crafting them and making sure you have decent party members repped up (I use Shulk + Dunban for crafting, Sharla + Shulk for making cylinders)
The AI is pretty meh but gets the job done. At least you can play as anyone so you can maximize at least one aspect of your team.

that guy is partiall right, the abilities would definitely be better if you had real people controlling them, but its not like the AI just sits there doing nothing, it gets spells off when it needs to and it will chain attacks if the necessary debuffs are in place
It helps a ton to control someone with Break and let the AI handle the topple/daze stuff. That's really the extent of the synergies between character abilities besides maybe putting a phys defense down or ether down kinda thing on the enemy.
Besides, once you get like 20 hours into the game you should be using chain attacks all the fucking time, and in chain attacks you DO get to control every member and combo abilities how you like. The combat in XB starts off pretty shit but does legitimately get better later on.

Xenoblade has never been universally loved, there's always been a vocal minority of people who didn't care for it and their complaints have always been pretty consistent (too much animu, too much MMOshit, etc.)
It pays to do some research before starting a game that requires a major time/money investment, at least if you don't want to risk finding yourself surprised/disappointed when it doesn't live up to the hype.
