ah, I just got past that one. I went straight for Wizzro, he's the easiest to kill because he weakpoints with almost every attack. Link reacting to things isn't new, he was doing that back in OOT, and he was emoting just fine ever since to show a basic level of interest and at least a "hot/cold" opinion in things. So many cutscenes, so many scripted battle events. For the conclusion they chose there could have been SOMETHING to hit at it beyond a shared glance at the start. Even it it was just Link making an emotional reaction, picking up the unconscious Zelda and galloping off after the last Ganondorf mission.
If they make a second one, they need to make a more varied win condition. Simply beating the enemy commanders isn't enough. Maybe make them based on lore or something.

All Hyrule Historia says is that there are three timelines - Child, Adult, and Failure.
Failure didn't specify what happened except that the Dorf won. My theory is that it's one of the timelines that Link 'leaves' during his quest, since he has to warp back to a Child at least twice throughout OoT, meaning that he would've abandoned a timeline mid-quest where the Dorf could've gained power.
