The problem wasn't typically dust, it was the system hardware itself having issues. You or I might not have been able to break the system, but it broke itself pretty easily. It was that period's version of the RROD, it just caused partial problems instead of completely fucking the system.

Mine's a launch model too. I've always been especially ginger with it, and it still has a small scratch that, to this day, I have no idea how it got there. It's especially evident when the screen is white, or just really bright, and it's especially annoying because it's right where all the text in every game ever happens to be.
With the way the rest of the machine is built, and the way they were all about quality, you'd think they would have done one of those Gorilla Glass treatments to the screen, but no. Just regular old easy-to-scratch plastic.
Honestly, it's not even THAT bad, it's just the brightness and sharpness of the OLED screen, ironically, brings the scratch into sharper focus, and it's distracting as fuck.
