I know the Wii U version isn't out yet, but it'll probably be a direct improvement on the 3DS version, so I'd say it'll probably end up something like (in terms of overall quality):

For me, it's probably Brawl. It's not really competitive friendly and tripping is shit, but the game's chock full of content and I adored the roster.
All the others were good too, but Smash 3DS seems to be lacking a bit outside of matches. Like the art style though, especially love what they did with Jigglypuff.

I've gotten the most enjoyment from Project M. It got me into Brawl modding, adds back Roy and Mewtwo, and Turbo mode is incredibly fun.
I've only played a bit of Smash 3ds since I don't own it (played some Classic Modefor my ggirlfriend). It definitely feels better than Brawl. I haven't played Melee recent enough to give a comparison on them.

I dunno man, I miss N64 Falcon's quicker smash attacks.
His smashes since Melee have been pretty laggy and useless, and in 4 all of his smashes have huge startup and recovery making them basically unusable against good players.
Although the knee almost makes up for his loss of quick smash attacks. But then they went and drastically slowed down the Falcon Punch from N64, god if it were as fast in Smash 4 as it was int eh N64 days Cap would be so good.

The only reason I liked Brawl the best, is because it introduced a lot of characters I liked. Wario, Snake, King Dedede, and Pokemon Trainer.
It also had trophies, which kept me playing for hours just to get. I found tripping annoying, but I'm not a tourneyfag so I didn't outright shit on the game for it.

Brawl was the SFxT of the Smash series, and Smash 4 is the 2013 patch. It's trying to polish shit and does so successfully; but it's still shit. The stages are mostly ass (mainly because the gimmicks are overbearing as fuck, good stages are ones like Pirate Ship where the gimmicks aren't completely overshadowing the match), the items are even worse than before with most of them being easy kills even at 0 percent and the roster is okay, but I predict even more balance issues than Brawl.
