This is the best roster. No matter what anyone says it is even way better than Project M. A few cut characters (Ice Climbers and Snake being the only important ones, but Snake is excusable), with a bunch of new very unique characters. There's also the lowest percentage of clones (not counting 64's 1 clone). Altogether it isn't perfect by any means, but it is definitely the best roster yet.

The game was ass, but there's a reason why it was one of, if not THE most hyped game of all time.
Obviously it's the best roster. That should be obvious and it isn't that good of a point in the game's favor because it had the previous rosters to easily build on. But in the context of being the fourth game in the series the roster has plenty of disappointments and Brawl's roster was less disappointing for its time. The only major bad thing about Brawl's roster was Mewtwo being cut, and at least it went in the direction of decloning clones into semi-clones. There's no reason Mewtwo shouldn't be back in, there's no reason Ridley shouldn't be in, and there's definitely no reason DK shouldn't have a third character given its popularity and success. Dark Pit is shit. I don't care how little time it took to make him; he wasn't even worth that. If you're going to make clones at least make them clones of characters I'd actually give a shit about instead of a palette swap.
Fortunately they can do DLC now and there can be more additions in the future.

Since they eschewed the names all together, they had no need for the arrows anymore. As for the Ice Climbers, it is possible that the pair could have been playable in development, but due to the limitations of the hardware, they were cut. The person I was responding to (unless it was you) was saying "Gah, there's no reason Ridley should of been excluded!" when it's quite obvious that there's a reason: Sakurai doesn't think it's appropriate for him to be that smaller.
And for good reason. Ridley is 99% consistently larger than Samus in just about every game he's been instead for the outdated NES game (retconned by Zero Mission where he's big). The point of that chart I made, by the way, was to show you can't use Olimar or Kirby as a comparison. Dedede is a big bigger than Kirby, and in Smash, that's still the case, despite them both supposedly being smaller than most characters, going by canon. Same thing with Olimar. He's supposed to be the size of a quarter, sure, but in the context of the Pikmin games he's the normal sized, playable character, whilst bulborbs and such share the same role as Ridley (ie giant bosses). In other words, a bulborb and Olimar are small, yes, but the bulborb still towers over him, and even when they're scaled up in Smash, this is still the case.

I'd say importance has mattered to a degree, when it comes to including new series at the very least. Sakurai tends to avoid choosing the C-to-D tier second party developed series like Custom Robo and what not and goes more the more notable and iconic series like Punch-Out!! and Duck Hunt. Even the seemingly most minor IPs in Smash serve a purpose (Ice Climbers, for example, were chosen by Sakurai himself to represent the one off NES "Action Series" games that predated Super Mario Bros).

I'll give you Jigglypuff, a lazy re-implementation of kirby assets onto a forgettable character that clearly overstayed her welcome. But Charizard is, barring Pikachu, the best Gen 1 Rep i can think of: Recognizable, Loved and with a Fighter build and shape that isn't seen often in Smash.
Most of my favorite pokemon are from recent gens and i can safely tell you that Lucario a shit.

A good balanced pokemon roster would consist of
Pikachu and Charizard for Gen I Reps. Arguably Mewtwo could fit, but i believe Gen I would already be oversaturated.
A middleground Gen III rep, whether it's Gardevoir, Blaziken orHopefullySableye, it'd be a nice way to promote ORAS too.
And Greninja for New gen rep.
There; 4-5 pokemon that balance out the fact that there's more than just 1 generation.
