>>
>>266129661
No, because according to Roguefags, there has never been a roguelike game, not even Rogue.
>>
>>266129661

This game is in a First Person perspective, and allows tree climbing.

define Rogue-Like.

this has faux-permadeath, limited inventory, randomized dungeons, turn based battle.

dungeons are in 3d. character models are sprites from, iirc, 8 view angles.

Closest you'll get is Wizardry, M&M, Legend of Grimrock and the like, but those belong to another genre.
So I'm gonna go with no.

If there is a table to your top right, you could step diagonally upwards on top of it.
>>
>>266133464
But then you wouldn't be able to step diagonally inside of it, so stepping diagonally could just automatically move you on top of it without needing a separate input

That'd be like needing to aim the camera upwards in order to walk up a hill in any traditional 3D game
>>

>>
>>266129661
Why wouldn't it be possible? It all comes down to what you want out of the experience, of course, but all the individual elements have been done before in 3D. Random generated dungeons, turn based combat, permadeath, RPG mechanics... What couldn't be done in 3D?
>>
>>266134493
It being in 3D adds literally nothing to the game besides being more difficult to make
>>
>>266134613
That's not what OP asked, though. He asked if it was possible. Not if it was a good idea.

Hellgate: London tried to be a 3D roguelike game with dashes of Diablo.

Whether or not it succeeded is still debated today.
>>
>>266134739
Didn't that game get some sort or remake / re-release on Steam lately? I never played it, but I'm a bit interested in trying it out.
>>
>>266134829
It got bought and turned into a free to play MMO by some weird-ass asian devs.

Just pirate the original release from 2007. The free one doesn't have singleplayer. As far as I know.

You should probably consider the fact that the re-release didn't change history and turn the original game into an MMO. The original game is an RPG game. In my opinion, it's worth playing. I personally enjoyed it.

All you need to know is in the image.
>>
>>266135436
Then again, Diablo was heavily influenced by roguelike games, bro.
>>
>>266130118
????

How can a game not be like itself
>>
>>266129661

Heavy Bullets is kind of a first person rogue-like...
>>
If it was actually 3d, that is you're able to move up and down in addition to your normal directions, then you'd probably want to remove grid movement, which is a no no according to the purists.

Although it's certainly possible.
>>
>>266135335
Ignore him.
The original game was both. Single player client and multiplayer client.
When flagship sank it was eventually sold to T3. Who decided to not distribute the singleplayer part of the game so people couldn't cheat as easily.

Nothing interesting happened here.
Just play the free 'online' one and just dont play with other people.

Also the T3 version has been out years.
>>
>>266135687
I mostly just heard negative reviews of it around release, which is why I never played it. I thought that if they had remade it to some extent, perhaps fixing some of the original issues, it would be a better game today and worth playing. Not sure I want to play the old version...
>>
>>266135593
I wonder. Isofort and all of that exists, so could we possibly make a program that renders the game in extremely primitive polygons? I'm talking about really simple untextured polygons for various enemy body parts, and then have it stick the body parts together when the enemy has them to recreate the enemy in 3d or something. The blocks could use the texture from your tileset, actually, if you had enough ram for that sorta thing.

Also I wanna play as a drider sort of race without the dark-elf part. Just human with spider legs so I can have some slight web abilities and good climbing. I think it'd be really fun to strategize and use limited webs in a fight and then eat food to regen them afterwards. Then again they'd be slightly OP so I think said abilities would need to be toned down quite a bit.

according to roguelikefags a game isn't a roguelike unless it's exactly the same as rogue
>>
>>266136234
Well, shit.

I guess I better get my facts straight, then.
>>
>>266135814
Sure, but Hellgate is even farther removed from roguelike concepts than Diablo was. You get randomized loot, but almost everything else is preset. The quests, the hubs, the characters, the bosses, quest-related locations and even the "randomized" areas themselves are only random to a very limited extent. You can play the game a couple of times without even noticing that some of sewer or street layouts change.

I don't mean this as a criticism, by the way. I don't fault the game for not being enough like a roguelike. I've enjoyed it as a straightforward action RPG. I just don't think it's warranted to call it a 3D roguelike.

He's trying to say there are games like rogue that do not count, because they only consider exact copies to fit the label.

I understand what you're saying and agree with you
>>
>>266137121
Well, that is not true. If it was true, the only rogue-like would be rogue, which can be like rogue because it is rogue itself. So there are games similar in their mechanics to rogue, called rogue-likes, and games that impose a whole different kind of challenge, not called rogue-likes.
